Zack Wheeler will not return in 2025, the Phillies announced ahead of Saturday’s matchup with the Nationals:
“Right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler had a follow-up evaluation and received second opinions this week after his successful right upper extremity blood clot removal on Monday, August 18. Wheeler was diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome and the recommendation is to undergo thoracic outlet decompression surgery in the coming weeks. Details of the surgery are forthcoming. The timeline of recovery from the surgery is generally 6-8 months.“
The Phillies will be without their ace for the rest of the year. Wheeler, 35, posted a 2.71 ERA in 24 starts this season with 195 strikeouts. It’s a brutal blow for the Phillies, losing their horse of the rotation.
Cristopher Sanchez, who has continued to shine in 2025, is now the ace of the Phillies rotation for the rest of this season. A mix of Ranger Suarez, Jesus Luzardo, Aaron Nola, and Taijuan Walker will follow him in the postseason.
Win it for Wheels.
