Opinion: I Don’t Hate Will of God’s Eagles Chant

Pagan ran into Eagles fan / sports talk radio caller Will of God at the Cowboys game the other day. He’s been trying to get people into this chant for years now:

Truthfully? I don’t hate it. I actually kind of like it. Will of God has that 90s hip hop voice, you know, when rappers were real. None of these fake-ass industry cats using autotune. Will has that gravely DMX and Mystikal voice, like he was the missing member of the Ruff Ryders and didn’t make it to the filming of the Get at me Dog music video. What’s to stop Will from writing his debut album and opening for Joe Conklin at the Sellersville Theater? Nothing at all.

Here’s why I support Will of God:

This is different. At least he’s trying something else. When you think about organized Eagles fan chants, we have a grand total of two. There’s the Eagles fight song, then the E-A-G-L-E-S / Eagles cheer, and that’s included IN the fight song itself. So really we only have one and a half organized chants. It was so predictable when Jeffrey Lurie walked out with Brandon Graham on Thursday night carrying the Lombardi trophies and they proceeded to perform all two of the Eagles chants. “Okay – we’re gonna do the fight song, then the Eagles cheer!” What else is there to do anyway? We’re the world’s best fan base, with the world’s smallest hymnal. It’s just one sheet of paper.

Not that anyone is expecting Lincoln Financial Field to turn into an English Premier League stadium, or even wants that. Though I think if we expanded our repertoire from two songs to three, that would be a start. It wouldn’t be asking too much. We could just steal the songs and repurpose them, like every other team and fan base on the globe. “You’re just a shit Quincy Carter! You’re just a shit Quincy Carter!” We could save that one for Dak Prescott’s next game at the Linc.

Anyway, plaudits to Will for being different. We gotta hook him up with this guy and let them collaborate:

Eagles, Eagles, Eagles all around

Eagles, Eagles, Eagles all around

Now Wentz is on the field, he’s bringing ’em down

Jefferies across the middle saying, touchdown

Ajayi’s in the goal, oh you don’t know?

Sproles is in the goal, oh you don’t know

Eagles, Eagles, Eagles all around

Eagles, Eagles, Eagles all around

Now Cox is on the D, bringing on the attack

Jenkins on the pick, he’s running it back

watch out, watch out, watch out for Bennett

watch out, watch out, watch out for B.G.

Eagles, Eagles, Eagles all around

Saints are going down
