Iron Hill is No More

Bit of a shocker on a Thursday morning:

Breweries in PA is reporting that Iron Hill is filing for bankruptcy, citing an internal email that an employee forwarded.

It’s understood at this point that the brewing economy kinda stinks right now. A lot of places are closing down, a combination of oversaturation and the craft beer explosion just sort of wearing off. You’ve got younger kids not drinking that much these days, which is another complication, and then adults showing a preference for mass-produced, mainstream stuff like Michelob Ultra. Eventually you get to a point where a small business becomes untenable, and in this case you shut it down entirely on a random Thursday morning.

Second thing that comes to mind is that this is another blow for Market East. No Sixers arena, now that Iron Hill location closing down. That stretch of Center City needs everything it can get, and here we go with another place shutting down.

Third thing that comes to mind is that Iron Hill wasn’t bad at all. Was it a chain? Yes. Did it feel like a chain? Not really. The food was decent enough and the beers were just as good as anything you’d get at an above-average microbrewery, so it’s a bummer to see all of these go kaput at the same time. RIP.
