Top Betr Picks for CFP First Round
Here’s a look at some of our favorite picks for this weekend’s top games, such as Oklahoma-Alabama and Miami-Texas A&M.
John Mateer, Oklahoma Sooners QB: Less 1.5 passing TDs
As mentioned above, it’s tough to beat a team twice. Not to mention, Mateer didn’t exactly show out last time against a good Alabama defense, throwing for just 138 yards and no touchdowns. Instead, Oklahoma’s defense made some huge plays to help secure the Sooners their biggest win of the season. For another, the Oklahoma offense has just really, really struggled across the past few weeks. Mateer has not been the same since injuring his hand, and it’s not hard to see him having a rough outing this time around with all the pressure on the former Washington State QB.
Germie Bernard, Alabama WR: More 2.5 rushing yards
Bernard is obviously a receiver, but he does have 17 rush attempts this season. With how much Alabama has struggled to run the ball this year — particularly in recent weeks — I think Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb will think outside the box as they design a running game for this matchup against Oklahoma. That could mean giving Bernard some chances to make plays out of the backfield. He has cleared this projection in 6 of 12 games this season. Bernard didn’t have a rush attempt when these teams met in Tuscaloosa earlier this year, but I don’t think that precludes Bernard from getting a carry or 2 in this game.
Malachi Toney, Miami Hurricanes WR: More 76.5 receiving yards
I think Malachi Toney is more than prepped for this game. He doesn’t often make mistakes, which is rare for a first-year player and the reason he’s a candidate for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year award. That tells me he has elite mental toughness, which is a winning edge in big moments like this in college football. Texas A&M, on the other hand, has never really been in this position before, and Aggies DC Jay Bateman could definitely be a little distracted with his imminent move to Kentucky after the Playoff. Toney is also just the most explosive player on the field, having eclipsed 100 yards receiving in 4 games already this year. Feels like he has another one coming, too.
