Bettors are All Over the 49ers to Cover in Seattle
In the waning hours of Sunday, January 11th, I smashed the -9.5 alt spread for the Seahawks to handle the 49ers in the Divisional Round. That was fueled largely by spite after the Eagles laid an egg at Lincoln Financial Field against a team missing George Kittle and a handful of other key players.
With the line opening at 7 and now sitting at 7.5, it turns out the general public is hammering the Niners to cover at BetMGM:
72% of the bets are on San Francisco at +7.5, amounting to 59% of the handle for that game. Bettors are also hammering the under at 72%, bringing it down from an opening number of 46.5 to 44.5. That’s the same thing exact that happened in the Birds/Niners game last week, and sure enough it finished with 42 points.
Seattle and San Fran played to 16 points and 30 points this season, facing each other in Week 1 and Week 18. They played to 37 points in November of 2024 and this series hasn’t hit over 44.5 points since Week 6 of last season, when Geno Smith and Brock Purdy threw for 567 yards combined.
Maybe it’s the large spread that’s attracting bettors, or maybe it’s the momentum angle for San Fran. Maybe it’s both. Perhaps the public looks at this NFC West matchup and throws out the numbers because it’s going to be a competitive slug fest. Could be true.
But if you’re like me and think the Seahawks take care of business against a depleted team on their home turf, basically doing what the Eagles should have done, then take Seattle and the under. It’s +144 at most PA sports betting apps and NJ betting apps.
We will let the hatred flow through us while betting against the Niners:
