Jaelan Phillips Got CRAZY Money from the Carolina Panthers
Holy cow:
Shout out to Phillips’ agent, who is the real MVP. Jaelan is a good player, but he’s not an $80 million guaranteed player, definitely not with his injury history. He was really good for the Eagles this past season, a handful of sacks, good play against the run, and a key contributor on one of the league’s best defenses, but this is a huge swing for Carolina.
If you break it out into AAV, $30 million per, that’s more than Brian Burns and Josh Hines-Allen. It’s not that far off Nick Bosa and Maxx Crosby money. According to Over the Cap, $80 million guaranteed is the 5th-most among current EDGE contracts as Phillips gets set to turn 27 in a few months.
Good for Jaelan for real, but that is wild! The Birds will have to look elsewhere at defensive end now. They’ve got Jalyx Hunt, and contract year Nolan Smith as the main guys at this point in time.
EDIT – I should point out that the Birds will get a compensatory pick for Phillips walking in free agency
