Great news here:

The Schmitter is hybrid cheesesteak of sorts. It’s got steak, onions, and cheese, but also includes salami and tomatoes and is served on a round Kaiser roll. It’s the creation of McNally’s Tavern in Chestnut Hill.

For background, the sandwich was served at Citizens Bank Park between 2004 and 2016. Most of those years they were in section 140, then in 2013 the Schmitter moved to a pop-up type of stand across the way while Federal Donuts took over the original spot, which had a larger kitchen setup. Billy Penn wrote up the story about 10 years ago, with Schmitter proprietor Joe Pie explaining that they just couldn’t make the sandwich at the best quality at their new location. So he pulled out of CBP, but it wasn’t contentious, it just wasn’t tenable anymore:

“Bottom line, they don’t have the space for the Schmitter right now. (said Pie) But we’re hoping to get back on the active roster sooner rather than later.”

Asked for comment, an Aramark spokesperson provided this statement:

“Since the opening of Citizens Bank Park, the Schmitter has played an important role in helping establish Ashburn Alley as one of baseball’s premier food destinations.  We had several conversations with Joe this off-season in an effort to continue serving the Schmitter at the ballpark. We respect Joe’s decision and thank him for his partnership and for bringing the Schmitter to Phillies fans for over ten years. We remain hopeful of finding a solution that will allow us to offer the Schmitter in the future. We take great pride in showcasing and featuring Philadelphia’s distinctive tastes and favorite sandwiches at the ballpark and we look forward to continuing to do so this season and beyond.”

We welcome the Schmitter back to Citizens Bank Park.
