Kevin Hayes is Off to Russia

Hayes is 34 now. He played his last two NHL years for the Penguins but only featured in 28 games this past season and wasn’t used in the playoffs. It would have made for a semi-storyline if he was on the ice against the Flyers, who gave him a seven-year contract worth $50 million back in 2019. A Chuck Fletcher special. Hayes did have a 54-point season in 2022-2023, and represented Philly in the 2023 All-Star Game, but his decline was precipitous after the Flyers traded him to St. Louis.
A cursory Googling reveals that Ak Bars Kazan is a pretty good team. They won 38 games this past regular season and went all the way to the finals, losing 4-2 to “HC Lokomotiv.” Worth pointing out, as well, that Hayes’ wife Katya is of Russian descent.
