Stay or Go: Phillies Have Decisions to Make on Six Free Agents
By Luke Arcaini
Published:
The Phillies, once again, fell short in the postseason, and now they’ll turn to an offseason with a lot of questions.
They’ll have six players hit free agency at the conclusion of the World Series. It was supposed to be seven players, but Tim Mayza has already agreed to a 1-year contract for the 2027 season.
Do the rest stay, or do they go? Here are my thoughts on the six impending Phillies free agents.
Alec Bohm
Bohm is one of the longer-tenured homegrown players, being selected with the 3rd overall pick in the 2018 Draft. Bohm has been a bit of a polarizing player throughout his time in Philadelphia. He’s had his good moments, and he’s certainly had his bad moments.
Bohm, who has now expanded his “resume” over to first base as well, will have some interest in the free agent market this offseason. He does not provide the pop that some teams would want from a corner infield spot, but in a free agent class that is fairly on the weaker side, Bohm will certainly have league-wide interest.
Even though he turned his season around down the stretch, it just feels like the end of Bohm in Philadelphia. Bohm is eligible for a qualifying offer of around $23M this offseason, but the Phillies will probably not offer him that.
Prediction: Alec Bohm leaves in free agency
Luis Arraez
Arraez only played 46 regular season games with the Phillies, but his impact was felt, and more for the guys ahead of him in the lineup.
Based off of his 2026 Giants stats, Arraez actually struggled a little with the Phillies, hitting just .278 after batting .324 with San Francisco. A drop in average was expected due to no longer hitting in a huge stadium like Oracle Park, but it was still a successful month and a half for Arraez in a Phillies uniform.
Acquiring him at the trade deadline finally gave the Phillies true protection behind Bryce Harper in the lineup, and you could see the effects. Harper hit .333 with a .496 OBP and a 1.069 OPS in the month of August, and it felt like he saw more pitches over the plate in a month than he ever has as a Phillie.
Arraez’s arrival required a defensive shuffle. It was a bargain, and not one that everybody agreed with, but I honestly felt like the Phillies defense actually got better from August on, with Bohm at first base, Bryson Stott sliding over to third base, and Harper going back to right field.
Arraez hasn’t been a guy that sticks with the same team for a while, and I still expect that to be the case. Could Dave Dombrowski bring him back? Absolutely. In the back of his head, he has to be thinking a little about only getting 46 games out of Arraez after trading Ramon Marquez. But if I had to guess, I don’t see Arraez back in a Phillies uniform next year.
Prediction: Luis Arraez leaves in free agency
Adolis Garcia
Adolis Garcia was another one-year corner outfielder dart throw from Dombrowski, and ultimately, it didn’t work.
Garcia played just 67 games for the Phillies before going down with a torn lat. Garcia underwent successful right latissimus doors repair surgery back in the middle of June and missed the rest of the 2026 Phillies season.
Garcia hit just .195 with 7 HRs across 231 at-bats with he Phillies, slugging .329 with a .599 OPS. He played great defense in right field, but once again, a corner outfield swing from Dave Dombrowski didn’t work out, and it’s hard to see Garcia returning after how last season went down.
Prediction: Adolis Garcia leaves in free agency
Edmundo Sosa
Edmundo Sosa’s run with the Phillies since the middle of the 2022 season has been incredible. Unfortunately, I think that time may be up.
Sosa has hit .260 with a 7.0 WAR across these five seasons, tallying 275 hits 157 RBIs, and a .746 OPS as a primary top bench player. Sosa is the guy that can play all around the diamond, especially the infield, and has even expanded to some outfield innings over the last 18 months.
The Phillies have priorities this offseason. On one hand, they need more depth, and Sosa is a great bench player. He provides a spark, energy, and versatility of a bench player that a championship team needs. But he also could be seen as valuable across the league as well, and some teams may be willing to offer more money, and more playing time, for the 30-year-old.
Sosa’s run in Philadelphia has been awesome. If the Phillies bring him back, it would be a good move, and I wouldn’t be shocked at all.
But I don’t think it happens. I think Sosa finds an enhanced role somewhere else.
Prediction: Edmundo Sosa leaves in free agency
Brooks Raley
I don’t think I really need to dig too far into this one.
I loved this move from Dombrowski at the trade deadline, and so did a lot of the Phillies fanbase. Unfortunately, this was one of those moves that just crashed and burned the second it went down.
Raley was bad for the Phillies, pitching to. a 7.94 ERA in 16 appearances and ultimately being left off of the postseason roster.
Dombrowski admitted in his end of the season press conference that the Raley move did not work out. That’s a frustrating one, considering Raley had a 1.96 ERA in 45 games with the Mets before arriving to Philadelphia, along with a 2.45 ERA in 2025.
It’s safe to assume Raley won’t be back.
Prediction: Brooks Raley leaves in free agency
Jose Alvarado
Jose Alvarado’s tenure with the Phillies: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
When Alvarado’s stuff is at his best, he’s one of the nastiest relief pitchers in the National League. The issue: he hasn’t been able to put together a full season since 2023.
Alvarado had a 5.86 ERA in a bad 2026 season. He went down for PEDs in 2025. He had a 4.09 ERA in 2024.
Alvarado has been a Phillie since 2021, and he’s tallied a 3.95 ERA over time in Philadelphia over 294 innings and a 2.8 WAR.
The Phillies need left-handed help out of their bullpen, but it feels like Alvarado’s time is up in Philadelphia.
Prediction: Jose Alvarado leaves in free agency
I made a prediction on the Phillies’ seven free agents right when the season ended, and believed Tim Mayza would be the only Phillie that returns. Mayza signed a 1-year deal with the Phillies last Thursday. Once the World Series is over, the six Phillies listed above will all become free agents, and I don’t believe any will be returning to Philadelphia in 2027.
