The Phillies are hiring Peter Fatse as their newest hitting coach for the 2027 season, according to Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic.

Fatse, 39, served as the Red Sox hitting coach from the start of 2022 to April of 2026, before he was fired with Alex Cora in a huge overhaul of the Boston coaching staff. Fatse was then hired by the Tampa Bay Rays as a hitting consultant, but will now take over hitting duties on Don Mattingly’s staff.

The Phillies let go of Bobby Dickerson and Kevin Long a few weeks after their elimination from the 2026 postseason. They filled Dickerson’s role with former Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, who will take over as infield and third base coach. Now, they bring Fatse into the equation, hoping to give this offense a new look.

Fatse was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2009 MLB Draft, and played a few minor league seasons in the organization. The Red Sox offense was near the bottom of the league to start the 2026 season, before Fatse was fired, but his first four years as Red Sox hitting coach were positive years, finishing Top 10 in batting average and runs scored in each of those seasons.

The Phillies have yet to announce the move, but expect to hear an official hiring in the coming days. The Phillies lock up their hitting coach early in the “offseason,” which is key with the pending lockout looming over baseball.
