Entitled Nationals Fans Aren’t Performing Their Civic Duties

Nationals fans, baseball’s version of stuffy dinner guests who don’t have time for dessert, are positively outraged – OUTRAGED, they’ll tell you! – with Nats manager Matt Williams, whose boneheaded decisions have the Nats to ceding a playoff spot to the New York Mets, whose stud pitcher is tapping out on the regular season because of pseudo science.

Dan Steinberg, writing for the DC Sports Bog:

A quartet of fans from the high-end Presidents Club loudly booing Williams after he left his post-game news conference. Fans — including season-ticket holders — walking out early, and making clear that their action was not inspired by apathy or disinterest or an early bedtime, but by disgust.

The question wasn’t why some fans were leaving in the bottom of the eighth; it was why so many stayed.

“I’m so angry right now,” seethed Calvin Osborne of Fort Washington as he departed. “I’m angry that the manager makes stupid decisions. I’m not coming back to the park until he’s gone. I’m serious. If it means five years, I’m not coming. I’m not coming back until Matt Williams is not the manager.”

“I’ve taken as much of this as I can stand. I mean, heads have really got to roll,” said Scott Bennett of the District. “I’m just flummoxed. I’ve never seen anything like this in all my life. It’s just heartbreaking, it really is.”

Faith in the home team to mount a late rally?

“No. None,” said 76-year old Doris Trussell as she walked out. “And I’m not coming back. I’m sick to death of [blown leads]. I’m so frustrated.”

It’s worth noting that the Nationals (who blew a large lead) still only lost the game by one run, 8-7, and gave up that go-ahead run in the eighth inning, or, about 9:30 p.m. I guess there was a big vote on the Senate floor this morning.

Neither New York (Mets) nor Washington deserves the playoffs.
