Pernell Whitaker Was 8-0 in New Jersey and Pennsylvania

Pernell Whitaker, one of the greatest boxers of all time, died this weekend at age 55 when he was hit by a car while crossing the street in Virginia Beach.

A Virginia native, “Sweet Pea” fought many times in this region, going 7-0 in Atlantic City and 1-0 in Philadelphia, defeating Harold Brazier back in 1992 at the old Philadelphia Civic Center, which was eventually torn down and replaced by the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Whitaker was an amazing defensive fighter, and if you’ve got a few minutes to spare, his Youtube highlights are really enjoyable to watch. Here’s the Philly fight, after the jump:
