It’s been a busy day of extensions for the Philadelphia Flyers:
The reports have been out in the air for a few weeks, but the Flyers officially announced the extension of goaltender Dan Vladar to a 5-year deal with a $5.5M AAV. Vladar had a breakout season in his first year with the Flyers, being the team MVP and a huge reason behind Philadelphia’s first playoff run since the COVID season.
The 29-year-old posted a .906 save percentage, good for 6th across the NHL, with that number increasing to .922 in the playoffs. Vladar, a career backup, will now be between the pipes as the lead goaltender for the Flyers for the upcoming future.
“From the moment Dan arrived in Philadelphia, he exceeded our expectations,” said General Manager Daniel Briere, via a release from the Flyers. “He earned this contract extension by the way he competed every time he stepped in net. Beyond his play on the ice, he was an exceptional addition to our locker room becoming a big leader and positive force for our group. He’s a valued teammate who really gained the trust and respect of his teammates and coaching staff right from the get go.”
Along with Vladar, the team also announced that F Tyson Foerster was signed to an 8-year extension worth $7.1M per year. Foerster played 29 games this past season for the Flyers after undergoing arm surgery in December. At the time that Foerster went down, the team expected him to miss the rest of the season, but Foerster was able to return for the playoffs after a quicker recovery than expected.
There’s a significant amount of buzz around the Flyers right now, even after these two extensions and the signing of Noel Acciari earlier this afternoon. There are rumors that a potential reunion with Claude Giroux, who is now a UFA, is on the table, with other players on Philadelphia’s radar as well.
It should be an interesting next few days.
