It Might Be Time for the Phillies to Take the Marshawn Lynch Approach to Questions

Can we all agree to get in the trust tree for a second? I’m frustrated after Saturday night so anything I say in this blog shouldn’t be held against me in the court of public opinion. I could have a totally different outlook after game 2. Fair? Awesome. Because this quote from Trea Turner and Nick Castellanos about the sun bothered the hell out of me. The last thing fans want to hear from players is an excuse about the sun when both teams are experiencing it. Especially from a team that took offense to the Braves making excuses in the playoffs last year:

Those quotes drive me up a wall.

And am I crazy or do these at bats in the beginning of the game not have an ounce of sun in them? Isn’t this the perfect situation you can ask for?

It’s a stadium you’ve played in hundreds of times. 1pm games, 4pm games. You should know how much of a factor the shadows and the sun off the batters eye is going to be a factor at that point. It feels like some players are getting in front of a potential bad hitting series. Especially when you know first three games are going to be 4:08, 4:08, 5:08 starts. Does that still mean you should get a pass for swinging at pitches in the dirt? If we’re going to sit here and blame the sun than, Here Comes the Sun better be the lead-in to the 2024 Phillies yearbook. Just cut the shit and just come out and admit the Mets put together better at bats than you.

Stats after the 7th inning:

  • Runs: Mets 6, Phillies 1
  • Hits: Mets 7, Phillies 3
  • Strikeouts: Mets 2, Phillies 3

Nick Castellanos got his first hit in a postseason game since Game 2 of the 2023 NLCS. Trea is 0-16 in his last four playoff games. Those games started at 5:07 (in a dome), 5:07, and 8:07. That second 5:07 game had the sunset at 6:10pm in Philadelphia. Yes, I’m so pissed off at these guys about I’m researching atmospheric physics to own Trea Turner. Because these are the two most important guys in the lineup. They protect Bryce Harper and they’re complaining about the sun. Bryce’s first two at bats he saw one strike. His third at bat, a strike out, he barely saw a pitch in the box:

It’s shades of last year when we had Turner and Alec Bohm in the four spot with the same results.

It’s already frustrating enough a team with this many great personalities on it are on borderline fraud watch. If this team ends up floundering I don’t think fans will ever be able to forgive these guys. It could have borderline dangerous psychological side effects like those Eagles teams from 2000-04 and the entire Sixers Process Era has had on those fanbases. An entire generation unable to trust and love because the team couldn’t see. They went into the All-Star break at 62-34 and finished .500, they limped to the end of the season with a .255/.316/.741 slash line. They played the second half of the season like an average team and came out in Game 1 looking like an average team. Again, I’m just talking shit. Everything I say cannot be held against me in the court of public opinion after 4:08pm.

All I’m asking for is if the Phillies lose tonight to start taking the Marshawn Lynch approach after games, “I’m only here so I don’t get fined.” Do your five minutes and go back into the cage:

The bat boy better have had a flood light right in Trea’s face for two hours.
