RADIO WARS: Burger King Howard Eskin Leaving 94 WIP

Per him:
After 38 years I am moving on from Sportsradio WIP where I launched the station’s sports talk franchise in 1986. I leave the station with great affection for the listeners who have made the work I do so fulfilling during my time there. I’m looking forward to what comes next… pic.twitter.com/ZF6Wl9gO8P

Talking to a couple of radio people, it sounds like this was not Howard’s choice. There was apparently supposed to be some statement from Audacy that never came. Note that it’s Friday afternoon and nobody at Audacy has said anything at all, only Spike and Ike. This was one of those departures that comes without any fanfare, so it’s easy enough to narrow it down from there. And when you take the news at face value, Howard obviously was not going to just up and leave in the middle of the football season when the Eagles are 12-2. So you read between the lines rather easily.
Anyway, as you know, Howard has been washed for a decade or more. He was doing a two-hour Saturday morning show, the occasional weekday hit, and going down to the games to ask a couple of questions, mingle with fans, and then leave. Basically a part-time job while masquerading as working media. The only thing he was doing of any actual substance was the sideline radio gig for the Philadelphia Eagles, and carrying the organization’s water. Whether or not he keeps doing that, we shall see.
Congratulations to The King on a great run at WIP and for pioneering blowhard radio in Philadelphia. We’re now in a post-Howard Eskin, post-Angelo Cataldi world and better off for it.
