SugarHouse Sportsbook, the sports betting app inside Rush Street Interactive’s popular PlaySugarHouse app, has been steady as the third most popular online sports betting option in New Jersey behind DraftKings and FanDuel. But it might be the go-to option early on for PA online sports betting as it looks poised to be one of the first PA sportsbooks of the gate. We explain further in our SugarHouse Sportsbook review.
While the Philadelphia-based casino’s online sports betting offering doesn’t have the same nationwide name recognition as some of its competitors, it has stood out thanks to its range of deposit options and straightforward bonus. It is also powered by Kambi, the same company that sets the market for DraftKings, so the wide range of betting options is there. The app seamlessly transitions its sportsbook with previously existing virtual casino betting options, providing players with a user-friendly one-stop destination for a comprehensive wagering experience.
SugarHouse's sports betting app is the online sportsbook of choice if you're looking for quick, easy deposit methods and a straightforward bonus. They are backed by Kambi, which means they offer the same odds and action as DraftKings Sportsbook and 888sport. The experience benefits by the fact that SugarHouse had been operated their online casino for several years and has smooth deposit and withdraw options.
SugarHouse Sportsbook PA
Online sports betting is not live yet in Pennsylvania, but it seems only a matter of time before it is. SugarHouse Sportsbook is expected to launch in PA anytime from April to July. SugarHouse’s sports betting app should lead the charge in the state– they were second out of the gate over the river in New Jersey, and by virtue of having an existing app under their own brand name they should be poised to be the first option in Pennsylvania.
Parent company Rush Street Interactive has already teased a free-to-play version of the Rivers Casino site – which looks nearly identical to the SugarHouse offering – so a launch may be imminent.
Only 12 apps will be available to the public in PA, with most operators choosing to brand their apps with their own name. SugarHouse, and Philly-based rival Parx, will get a leg up since both are already populra brand names in Eastern Pennsylvania. Lesser known Valley Forge Casino and Resort will rely on a partnership with FanDuel to bouy its efforts.
SugarHouse Casino opened its physical sportsbook in December. We sat down with VP and General Counsel Evan Davis to discuss how things are going:
SugarHouse Sportsbook NJ
SugarHouse Sportsbook launched in New Jersey on August 23, 2018, adding a sports betting option to its PlaySugarHouse.com app. They became the second operator to offer online sports betting in New Jersey behind DraftKings. Upon its initial release, SugarHouse Sportsbook offereds players a wide-ranging variety of sports to bet on and an exhaustive list of wagering options within each of those sports. Particularly of note, the rollout includes an increasingly popular live-ticket system, or “cash out” option, similar to DraftKings Sportsbook, which allows bettors to hedge before the outcome of a bet is determined. Traditional pre-game wagers with a variety of alternate odds are available, as are parlays and futures bets. The SugarHouse Sportsbook also offers an astounding set of live betting options with in-play props, play outcomes, alternative game lines, and totals behind a simple and easy-to-navigate interface.
March 2019 update
SugarHouse Sportsbook has slipped to third in revenue in New Jersey behind William Hill. But all attention has been turned toward their launch in PA. Sources say they are ready to go and just waiting on approval from the state. A launch prior to the NBA playoffs, which should come with heightened interest in the Sixers, would be the ideal scenario.
SugarHouse Sportsbook promo code
Unlike other sportsbooks that offer daily and weekly incentives, SugarHouse decided to just offer a $250 deposit bonus. You may use promo code CROSSINGBROAD, however it is not necessary to get the bonus.
The best part is that it has relatively few restrictions: you simple have to wager it once before it’s eligible for withdraw.
Getting started with SugarHouse Sportsbook
Like all other mobile sports betting apps, the PlaySugarHouse app uses geo-location technology to ensure bets are being placed only in the state of New Jersey. One thing that I like about the app is that you don’t have to sign up in order to see get a look at its functionality or different options. You can do a self-tour, peak around, and get a feel for what it’s about. Once doing so, my guess is that you will want to create an account. Upon signing up, be prepared to enter a valid driver’s license or state identification. To expedite the process, the app offers an optional fast-registration that snaps a picture of your license or state ID card.
As a bonus, your initial deposit (which requires a $10 minimum) will be matched up to $250.
Funding your account
Getting money into your account is quick and easy. From the cashier menu, users can fund their accounts with the following methods:
- checking account
- credit or debit card
- Cash @ Casino Cage
- wire transfer
- in person at CVS, 7-11 or Family Dollar
Getting money into your account is easy, and so is getting it out. I personally executed a haggle-free cash out straight to my checking account shortly after the app’s launch and received the money in a timely fashion. The PlaySugarHouse app has been around for a while and it shows– deposit and withdraw options are much better than New Jersey sports betting competitors for in the early going.
The app immediately draws users to a banner that showcases the day’s featured events, promotions, and ads for casino betting. There is also a list of that sporting events broken up by time, a sliding menu of live/upcoming and futures bets, and a search function that allows you to find action by sport, league, or team.
Once within a specific game, SugarHouse Sportsbook offers numerous betting options available for both novice and more experienced bettors. For example, a standard baseball betting options include: moneyline, run line, game totals, alternative game lines, single-game parlays, scoring props, inning props, and player props. You can get a feel for the menu design:
In terms of betting lines offered, I did a quick look at DraftKings Sportsbook and SugarHouse Sportsbook– both use the gaming technology company Kambi for its odds, so the lines and odds offered between the two apps should be identical. Upon my initial use of each app, it does appear that the SugarHouse app offers a few additional action by inning. I don’t know if that’s the case across the board, but I will say at the very least that I found the SugarHouse Sportsbook individual game menu easier to navigate.
If it’s a sport, then there’s pretty good chance the app has odds on it.
Types of bets
Once into your betting options, SugarHouse Sportsbook offers all of the action that you would expect:
The individual lines sit in white font in individual blue boxes making a selected wager clearly identifiable and easy to execute. Upon selecting your bet, a pop-up overly will appear which asks for a risk amount and has a large “place bet” button that locks in the wager.
Actually, it doesn’t lock in your wager at all, and that’s because there is also a live-ticket system that allows you cash out of a bet at a profit if a game shifts in your favor, or at a hedged loss if things aren’t going well. We explained more about this when DraftKings Sportsbook debuted the feature. This allows bettors the flexibility to read and react to an event as it unfolds. For instance, if the Phillies bullpen enters a tie game in the seventh inning and a bettor wants to get out before the inevitable crash, they can do so. The ability to minimize risk, ensure profits, and hedge bets will fundamentally change the way sports bettors approach betting. Placing a bet is no longer a send it in pray process. I do warn, however, to be careful with this feature. Bettors who overreact to the inevitable highs and lows of a sporting event have a chance to sell a potentially lucrative ticket at a fraction of its worth or needlessly hedge a stressful bet that eventually wins.
Other live betting options are available, too. Baseball offerings include the outcome of specific at-bats, if a run will be scored in an inning, and at-bat level bets. We will update our look at live betting options once the first weekend of college football and NFL seasons are completed.
Player limits and responsible gambling
It appears to at least some extent the New Jersey DGE is requiring all online sportsbooks to inform its users of potential gambling pitfalls and provide resources and tools available to those who need them.
The app allows bettors to set daily, weekly, and monthly deposit and spending limits. This ensures that a person won’t wildly throw money into the account or chase high loss totals once it is there. Moreover, bettors can set daily time limits that restricts overall usage, and they can also impose self-suspensions for “cool down” periods as well as a self-exclusion to prohibit future use altogether. The thing to remember here is to set rigid restrictions. Don’t spend what you can’t afford. Develop a budget and stick with it no matter what.
SugarHouse Sportsbook app
The PlaySugarHouse casino app updated on August 23rd to include the sportsbook, which became NJ’s third live online sportsbook, and was updated again in February with some bug fixes.
The app has 3.1 stores in the iOS App Store from 70 reviews. Most are either 5 or 1 star, with many complaints revolving around players having bugs opening the app and general UI, which we agree is not the best– however it is generally fast and responsive.
I like the simplicity and functionality of this app. It’s wide variety of deposit and withdraw options makes transactions quick and easy. It doesn’t have the same brand strength as DraftKings, nor does it have as sleek an interface and design, but it’s functionality is smooth and easy to navigate sans a decent number of bugs. The amount of betting options is staggering, and the various types of bets provide users with a fun and entertaining way that will ultimately change how they watch sports. For players who all enjoy casino slot and table games, the seamless transition between those expansive options and the sportsbook will be an attractive feature.
