Cole Hamels May Appear on Big League Chew Packaging

So much for that gruff cartoon figure.

According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, Matt Kemp and Cole Hamels will be the new spokesmen for Big League Chew.

From the Great Divider: []

Shredded gum brand Big League Chew will debut national packaging that will feature an active athlete — Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp — instead of the cartoon characters that have existed on more than 500 million pouches since Big League Chew first hit shelves 33 years ago. In June, a picture of Kemp will adorn the front of the gum package.

The brand, through a partnership with PLB Sports, a maker of athlete-endorsed food products, also has signed Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels.

It's unclear if Hamels will also be a package boy.

Video: Here’s Cole and Heidi Hamels at a Photo Shoot with Their Two Boys and Adopted Ethiopian Baby Reeve

Kyle Scott - February 8, 2013

Here’s what Ms. CB said to me when we were watching this story last night: “Why is it a four-year approval process to adopt a baby from Ethiopian? Like, can they really afford to be picky?”

There’s no way demand is outpacing supply here. Plus, Cole and Heidi will bring in more than $200 million in their lifetimes (probably well north of that)– what Ethiopian adoption broker had the gall to put them on a waiting list? That’s great, Mr. Famous Millionaire, and we’ll be sure to add it to your file. But there are other concerns for this starving child who was abandoned in the AIDS riddled country. What kind of toys will you give her? Will she get her own room? Will you get her a dog? She wants a dog. What about a gazelle? Will you allow her to put sugar in her cereal? Will she be breast fed?

Anyway, good for Cole, Heidi and baby Reeve. That kid just hit the jackpot (quite literally), and so will the next Ethiopian the Pitts Hamels say they plan on adopting.

Now seems like a good time to remember this quote from Heidi, in 2009:

"We're in the process of adopting an AIDS orphan from Ethiopia. Maybe two. I'm so pumped. I'd adopt six if I could. When I was five years old-I grew up in a very rural town in Missouri, and I had never even seen a black person-they asked us to draw a picture of ourselves in the future, and I drew myself holding hands with a line of tiny black stick figures. I've always wanted this."

[Diane Sawyer voice] And there they are, three-fifths of the Hamelseses. And what a lovely family they are: [end Diane Sawyer voice]

Cole Hamels Experienced Offseason Shoulder Soreness

Kyle Scott - January 10, 2013

Unquestionably, the most counted on Phillie going into the season is Cole Hamels.

So of course he experienced an offseason shoulder issue.

Jim Salisbury reports that Hamels “encountered an issue” in his offseason throwing program and contacted team trained Scott Sheridan:

Amaro confirmed that the issue arose early in the offseason and the GM disclosed that Hamels actually had “some shoulder soreness at the end of the season.” Amaro said that shoulder soreness was “not uncommon.”

According to Amaro, Hamels “got aggressive” with his throwing program sometime in October. The pitcher, according to Amaro, “had some soreness” and contacted [head athletic trainer] Scott Sheridan.

“We shut him down for a couple of weeks, but he’s fine now,” Amaro said. “He was being proactive more than anything else, which is good. We backed him off and slowed him down, but he’s back throwing now and doing fine. He’s had no complaints.”

It sounds like nothing. But, Amaro is the same guy whose updates on injuries to Ryan Howard and Chase Utley last year were grotesquely inaccurate.

Every pitcher, ever, for all eternity, will experience shoulder soreness from time to time, especially when first beginning an offseason throwing program. This doesn’t sound like anything to worry about. But remember it.

Cole Hamels Will Cook a Four-Course Meal on TV Tomorrow

Kyle Scott - October 16, 2012

As we told you about last month, Cole Hamels will be appearing on an episode of Life After Top Chef, which will air tomorrow at 10 p.m. on Bravo.

But it gets better.

Not only will Cole be on the show, half of the Phillies roster and Shane Victorino will be, too. From the press release:

– Cole Hamels, Phillies Pitcher and co-founder of The Hamels Foundation

– Heidi Hamels, co-founder of The Hamels Foundation

– Shane Victorino, former Phillies

– Jonathan Papelbon, Phillies

– Ryan Howard, Phillies

– Kyle Kendrick, Phillies

– Jennifer Carroll, chef and star of Bravo's "Life After Top Chef" and in the past, "Top Chef" and "Top Chef All Stars"

– Sponsors and Guests

WHAT: In April, Phillies Cole Hamels and wife, Heidi, hosted a foundation dinner with Chef Jennifer Carroll. The event was filmed for an episode of Bravo TV's "Life After Top Chef' reality show. Watch Phillies Ace Pitcher cooking in the kitchen, alongside Chef Carroll to prepare a four course dinner for sponsors and even his teammates! Proceeds benefited The Hamels Foundation.

Not quite as cool as Entourage… but better than Hawaii Five-0, I suppose.

Cole Hamels to Appear on “Top Chef” Spinoff

Kyle Scott - September 11, 2012

Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Shane Victorino have appeared in TV shows that mostly fit their respective personalities– Utley and Howard in It’s Always Sunny, Howard in Entourage, and Victorino in Hawaii Five-0.

So, perhaps it’s fitting that Cole Hamels will make an appearance on Bravo.

On their Facebook page, The Hamels Foundation posted this screen grab of a brief cameo Hamels made in a trailer for Life After Top Chef, a new show coming to Bravo this fall about the hectic lives of chefs after they appear on Top Chef. Sounds tasty.

No details on what role Cole (and presumably Heidi) will play on the show, but it’s not their first appearance on reality TV. In 2009, the couple appeared in Baseball Wives on E!. Perhaps Cole will be starring on FOX this fall, too.

Cole Hamels Scratched From Tonight’s Start, Cloyd Called Up

Ryan Gillon - August 29, 2012

Ask and ye shall receive. (Photo: Morning Call)

Wow… maybe the Phillies read the Morning Wood comment section… or maybe they didn't have any other options on short notice.

Cole Hamels has been scratched from his start tonight due to a gastrointestinal illness, which opens the door for…

Cloyd, just named the International League MVP, is 12-1 as a member of the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs with a 2.35 ERA. He'll take the mound against the Mets Matt Harvey (2-3, 2.75 ERA).
