Lucasfilm Requested (Demanded?) That Yoda Wield a Green Lightsaber on Ilya Bryzgalov’s Mask

I talked about the error on Bryz’s mask on the Great Sports Debate last week, and told you about the ensuing correction – from red to green, Yoda’s lightsaber went – this morning. But now we learn that the change was requested by Lucasfilm, George Lucas’s production company responsible for Star Wars, which takes the movie’s expanded universe – and that apparently includes Bryz’s head – very seriously.

Franny Drummond, who paints Bryz’s masks, told CSN’s blog that someone from Lucasfilm contacted the Flyers equipment manager and requested the change to Bryz's new helmet. To be historically accurate, of course.

"We didn't realize we'd be offending anyone," Drummond said. "Yoda's Lightsaber was actually an orange-ish color before we changed it. We were going for a hint of the Flyers' colors in Yoda as well. There were no bad intentions. It was just a matching thing."

Matching thing, it was. Trademark thing, too.

Cliff Lee and His Kids Pledge Allegiance to the National League All-Star Team [sic]

Kyle Scott - July 3, 2012

I can’t tell you how much it injures my soul to watch this MLB Fan Cave-staged promo video of an increasingly maligned Cliff Lee (and his cute kids) awkwardly pledging his allegiance to the All-Star team he’s not on. But hey, at least Jackson is optimistic about the Phillies’ chances: “Because my dad likes home field advantage.”

Let’s start with a win, little guy.

Carlos Ruiz Makes the All-Star Team

MLB announced the All-Star selections today. Cole Hamels, Jonathan Papelbon and Carlos Ruiz have all been named to the team. Ruiz was added as a manager’s selction. Annnd that was just the most exciting moment of the season.

Chase and Jen Utley held their annual Utley All-Stars For Animals event last night to raise money for the Pennsylvania SPCA.

Most of the Phillies were in attendance, some with wives and girlfriends. Kyle Kendrick, coming off his slopfest Wednesday night, wasn’t too eager to do any interviews with TV stations. A laughing Cole Hamels, not wanting to talk about plunking Bryce Harper on Sunday night, was hesitant to speak to CSN, but eventually caved as the topic was avoided.

Someone had a Bugatti parked outside, but I’m not 100% certain it belonged to a Phillie… there were some heavier hitters walking around.

Also, Heidi Hamels wins. Everything.

Ilya Bryzgalov Named NHL First Star of the Month

Kyle Scott - April 2, 2012

Screen Shot 2012-04-02 at 1.41.50 PM

Look at those stars. So bright. So pretty. So… Russian?

The NHL named Ilya Bryzgalov their first star of March, which is, obviously, perfect timing for getting hot for the playoffs (you know, minus him fracturing a bone in his foot).

Bryzgalov went 10-2-1 with a 1.43 goals-against average, .947 save

percentage and League-high four shutouts as the Flyers (46-24-9, 101

points) moved within one point of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the fourth

seed, and home-ice advantage, in the Eastern Conference. He won his first

seven starts of the month and became the first Flyer to pick up four

shutouts in a five-game span. Bryzgalov recorded three consecutive blank

sheets March 8-13 and set a franchise record with a 249:43 shutout streak.

In total, he allowed two goals or fewer in 11 of 13 starts. The Togliatti,

Russia native is 32-15-7 with a 2.46 goals-against average, .910 save

percentage and six shutouts in 57 appearances.

The Pens’ Evgeni Malkin was named the second star, and Sabres goaltender and female Ryan Miller was third star.

Wayne Simmonds was also named NHL player of the week for, well, this:

Simmonds scored in four straight games, totaling five goals and one

assist as the Flyers (46-24-9, 101 points) moved within one point of the

Pittsburgh Penguins for the fourth seed, and home-ice advantage, in the

Eastern Conference. He scored once in a 5-3 loss against the Tampa Bay

Lightning March 26, recorded two goals and an assist in a 7-1 victory at

the Toronto Maple Leafs March 29, deflected a shot in off his face in a 4-3

shootout loss against the Ottawa Senators March 31 and closed the week with

a goal in a 6-4 triumph at the Pittsburgh Penguins April 1. In his first

season with the Flyers, the 23-year-old has established career highs in

goals (27) and points (48) in 79 games.

– After setting the Flyers all-time shutout streak record, Ilya Bryzgalov has been named the NHL’s First Star of the Week for the second week in a row.

– In partnership with Unsung Hero Apparel, Claude Giroux is lending his support to get the small community of Hearst, in Northern Ontario, its own physiotherapy and rehabilitation centre…

The promo video they put together features Claude being dirty, as usual.

Ryan Howard at NBA All-Star Weekend

Kyle Scott - February 26, 2012

Ryan Howard will leave Florida today to visit Dr. Mark Myerson, the surgeon who performed his ACL surgery. Ruben Amaro is calling it a routine visit despite the fact that a small cyst (an infection, of sorts) exists in the area near Howard’s incision.

Before leaving, The Big Piece stopped off at NBA All-Star festivities in Orlando last night. At first it looked like he had lousy seats… but then everyone on Twitter pointed out that Howard and his fianceé, Krystle Campbell, were seated right behind NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver. So, yeah, not bad.

This guy tweeted that he later sat a table with Howard, Blake Griffin, Vinny from Jersey Shore and Chandler Parsons. Has a pic with Blake to prove it. Carry on.
