SugarHouse Becomes The First PA Online Casino on iOS

Kyle Scott - July 19, 2019

SugarHouse became the first and only PA online casino to offer an option to play on iOS. Thus far, legal gambling sites and apps in Pennsylvania, including PA sports betting sites, have not been available to play on iPhones or iPads.

  • Excellent bonus
  • Best deposit options
  • iOS availability

SugarHouse Online Casino partnered with the GeoGuard location app to allow users in Pennsylvania to play through the mobile web on iPhones and iPads.

Here’s how it works.

Users who sign up here can register and then they will be prompted to download a geo location app from the App Store. This is a pretty simple process. Once the app is on the phone, users can return to their browser, visit the SugarHouse site, and begin to play their online slot games.

This first mover advantage is significant for SugarHouse in PA.

With iOS users making up roughly half of the mobile market, this presents a significant opportunity. What’s more, SugarHouse been the leader in online betting in PA already. They took in nearly $20 million in bets in June, pacing the market. The addition of iOS should add fuel to the early dominance of both SugarHouse Sportsbook and their online casino.

The Apple question has been a two-fold issue.

A recent Apple App Store policy update dictates that developers must code any new gambling apps submitted to the App Store specifically for iOS. Most online casinos use web (HTML) code to power their online casinos. This meant that many of them now have to scramble to re-code their apps for the most popular mobile operating system.

In addition, state regulators in New Jersey and Pennsylvania require an added level of verification on geo location checks, something more than just pinging a phone’s GPS. So this prevented online casino games from being available on the mobile web through iOS.

With SugarHouse, users can play online slots with games like Blackjack and Poker to soon follow. Other casinos expected to enter the market consist of Unibet and potentially even DraftKings Sportsbook PA. But for right now, SugarHouse is the lone online casino option available to play on iOS in PA.

Favorites to win Open Championship at SugarHouse Sportsbook

1. Rory McIlroy (+900)

The winner of the 2014 iteration of the British Open, McIlroy is SugarHouse’s favorite this time around. He won the Players Championship back in March and also won the Canadian Open last month. He’s finished in the top-10 in 10 of his 13 PGA Tour appearances this season, so he’s certainly in a good position to make some noise this time around.

2. Brooks Koepka (+1000)

Koepka has performed WELL in the three majors to be played so far this season. He won the PGA Championship back in May and was the runner-up in the Masters and U.S. Open. Like always, he’ll be a popular bet – currently receiving upwards of 20% of the handle at DraftKing Sportsbook – and based on his past performances, he just might make a run at this one.

3. Jon Rahm (+1400)

Despite missing the cut in two of the last three tournaments he’s participated in (including the PGA Championship), Rahm has had a strong showing of late. After winning the Zurich Classic of New Orelans, he finished third in the US Open behind Brooks Koepka and champion Gary Woodland. Rahm will be looking for his first major championship.

4. Dustin Johnson (+1600)

Johnson will look to rebound from a rough stretch of tournaments of late. After finishing in the top 10 in 8 of 11 appearances, he finished 35th at the US Open and missed the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Still, he was the runner-up at the Masters and the PGA Championship this season and won WGC-Mexico Championship in February. He’ll be looking for his 2nd major title after winning the US Open in 2016.

5. Tiger Woods (+1800)

Tiger will be looking to continue his resurgent string of success this weekend. His memorable win at the Masters is by far the best moment of this PGA Tour season. After missing the cut at the PGA Championship, he placed 9th at the Memorial Tournament, and then finished 21st at the US Open. Tiger will look to claim his 4th British Open victory, having last won it in 2006. It would also be his 16th major win, two more behind Jack Nicklaus for the most major championships in PGA Tour history.

Home Run Derby Betting Odds at SugarHouse Sportsbook

Joe DiProsperos - July 8, 2019

The 2019 MLB Home Run Derby is set to kick off tonight at Progressive Field in Cleveland. It’s arguably the biggest draw of All-Star Week, serving as a high-flying appetizer to the All-Star Game on Tuesday. This year’s Derby boasts a solid collection of young stars like Vlad Guerrero Jr, Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, and Ronald Acuna Jr. In anticipation of the Derby, SugarHouse Sportsbook released their odds for tonight.

Gambling Problem? Call 1-800-Gambler. Only 1x Wager Applies, Playable in PA Only

The 2019 Home Run Derby could provide a real glimpse into how a single event could attract new betters for PA online sports betting. Our friends over at PA Sportsbooks broke down what it could mean for the early market.

Home Run Derby odds

PlayerOdds
Josh Bell+300
Pete Alonso+400
Vlad Guerrero Jr.+400
Matt Chapman+800
Joc Pederson+800
Alex Bregman+900
Carlos Santana+1000
Ronald Acuna Jr.+1100

Josh Bell +300

Bell has had a very impressive year thus far. In his fourth season in the league, he leads the NL in RBI’s, is also fourth in home runs, third in slugging percentage, and is third in on-base plus slugging. His strong season has helped the Pirates stay in the race for first place in the NL Central.

In addition to having the seventh-highest average exit velocity in the majors (93.3 MPH), he has the fourth-most balls hit over 95 MPH and also hit longest home run (473 feet) among all Home Derby competitors. So it’s pretty easy to see why he’s considered to be the favorite going into tonight.

Pete Alonso +400

In what has been an overall miserable season for the New York Mets, Alonso has been quite the bright spot for them. His 30 home runs is tops among all rookies in addition to being second in the MLB. He is also fifth in slugging percentage and has the second-highest maximum exit velocity in the league.

Alonso will look to become only the second rookie to win the Home Run Derby outright following Aaron Judge’s victory in 2017. But the odds are currently against him, as only two of the last seven rookies to compete in the Home Run Derby have advanced past the first round (Judge in 2017 and Joc Pederson in 2015).

Alonso is also the most heavily bet player at DraftKings Sportsbook. He’s getting 31% of the bets and 40% of the handle. AND HE’S BOOSTED TO +450 . Not great signs.

His second cousin is also throwing to him, which may or may not bode well. To the tape!

Yeah, that guy looks like he’s gonna sh*t himself. Pass.

Vlad Guerrero Jr. +400

The other rookie competing in this year’s derby, Guerrero has been one of the most talked-about young guys in the game. In addition to hitting balls that sound insanely aesthetically-pleasing to the ear, his batting practice sessions have become nearly as entertaining as the game, part of the reason he’s a popular pick to win tonight.

Guerrero’s maximum exit velocity of 118.9 is not only the best amongst all competitors this year, it also is the best in the league. At 20 years-old, he is the youngest player ever to partake in the Derby.

And while it’s tempting to fade a popular pick, there’s also this:

Stunned silence befell me.

Matt Chapman +800

Chapman is the last-minute replacement for Christian Yelich, who was forced to back out because of a back injury. Currently in his third season in the league, Chapman is 6th in the AL in home runs (21) and 8th in slugging percentage (.534). He had only hit 24 home runs the entire 2018 season.

He’s currently ninth in the league in average exit velocity at 93.0 MPH, which is right on par with Derby favorite Josh Bell. A Gold-Glove winner last season, Chapman will look to put his power on diplay.

Joc Pederson +800

Pederson is having another solid season for the Dodgers. He’s up to 20 home runs and 42 RBI’s for a Dodgers team that currently boasts the best record in the majors.

This will be Pederson’s second appearance in the Home Run Derby following his 2015 performance in which he finished as the runner-up to Todd Frazier.

Alex Bregman +900

Bregman is having yet another solid season at the plate. He’s fourth in AL in home runs (23) and ninth in slugging percentage (.533).

Bregman has the highest launch angle amongst all competitors, but the shortest average home run distance (379 ft). Progressive Field has their own version of the “Green Monster” in left field, so Bregman is going to need all the lift he can get in order to compete.

Carlos Santana +1000

Santana will be this year’s hometown representative. Players competing on their home field have had success in the past, most notably Bryce Harper in last year’s derby and Todd Frazier in 2015.

Knowing every part of your home field can certainly give you an edge, so we’ll see how well Santana can take advantage of it.

Ronald Acuna Jr. +1100

Despite primarily being the Braves’ leadoff hitter, Acuna has put up some solid power numbers this year. His 21 home runs are good for 11th in the NL and possesses above average exit velocity. He is also eighth in the league and tops amongst Derby participants in average home run distance (422 ft).

How To Play SugarHouse Sportsbook in PA

Kyle Scott - June 17, 2019

SugarHouse Sportsbook is now fully live for PA online sports betting. It’s been a little over a week since the app has come out of testing, and with some early kinks ironed out, users can now sign up and bet with SugarHouse.

In New Jersey and looking for SugarHouse? Check out our full SugarHouse Sportsbook review.

Where to play SugarHouse Sportsbook in PA

There are only two places you can play SugarHouse in PA, and one very notable way you can’t:

Web

SugarHouse Sportsbook can be played from a computer. In fact, this is the only option for people with iPhones or iPads who want to get in on the action. You can sign up for SugarHouse on the web here .

Android

The PlaySugarHouse app is available on Android here. While the Google Play store doesn’t allow real money gaming apps in its store, you can sign up on your desktop or laptop and then download the app and login.

Where you can’t play SugarHouse Sportsbook in PA

You can sign up for SugarHouse Sportsbook on iOS here . But you can’t place a bet through your mobile browser and will have to use a desktop or laptop because SugarHouse requires users to download a geo-location tool, which you can’t do on iOS.

We delved into the reasons here, but the gist is that a recent Apple App Store policy change requires gambling apps to be built natively for iOS rather than as a port of an HTML web version. That means Rush Street Interactive, owners of the PlaySugarHouse app, will have to bring their code into compliance before you bet with SugarHouse in PA.

SugarHouse PA promo code

SugarHouse is making available its same $250 deposit bonus that is available in New Jersey in Pennsylvania.

PA players can enter promo code 250MATCH to get their first deposit matched up to $250. The best part? You only have to bet the bonus once before it is eligible for withdraw. We find this is the easiest, most simple signup bonus among the best sports betting sites.

What else is going to PA?

We have the full scoop on PA online sports betting, but in the coming months you can expect to see FanDuel Sportsbook, Parx Sportsbook, and FOX Bet coming to PA.

SugarHouse Casino Will Become Rivers Casino Philadelphia

Russ Joy - June 12, 2019

The SugarHouse Casino you’ve known and loved will be no more as of the end of Summer 2019. Don’t worry, it’s not going anywhere, but it is being rebranded as Rivers Casino Philadelphia. The proposed change was presented to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board by Rush Street Gaming, who own not only SugarHouse Casino, but also Rivers Casinos in Pittsburgh, Des Plaines, and Schenectady. The move makes a ton of sense from a continuity standpoint, as it will allow Rush Street Gaming to streamline the Rivers Casino brand under the same corporate umbrella.

What This Means for Sports Betting and the SugarHouse Sportsbook

As you likely know already, SugarHouse Sportsbook went live for online betting in PA on May 31. It will become Rivers Sportsbook, which was already expected to launch in PA. We’ve been told that it will be rebranded as BetRivers, while the online casino will likely be branded as Rivers Casino PA.

Rivers Philadelphia Timeline

As for the Philadelphia rebranding, Rush Street Gaming presented the following timeline for the rebranding rollout:

Rivers Casino Philadelphia SugarHouse Sportsbook Schedule

Tentative Timeline

  • Now: Announcement of intention to rebrand
  • Early Summer: Begin property transformation, including internal controls (signage, gaming items, etc.)
  • Mid Summer: Launch iGaming
  • End Summer: Launch of expanded, permanent sportsbook
  • Fall 2019: Ceremonial Rivers Casino Philadelphia Launch

What This Means for SugarHouse Casino

SugarHouse Casino’s rebranding does little to change the existing structure with one major exception. Rush Street Gaming presented the launch of an expanded, permanent sportsbook to be built on-site by the end of Summer 2019– this was already in the works. That should be welcome news to any interested sports betters in the greater Philadelphia area.

Expansion SugarHouse Casino Rivers Casino Philadelphia

Rebranding as Rivers Casino Philadelphia

From the Rush Street presentation:

  • Continuously improving customer experiences is a shared goal of the PGCB and Rush Street
  • As gaming becomes a 360-degree experience -land-based, mobile, online- a unified brand for Rush Street’s PA properties will best serve the Commonwealth, host communities, guests, and team members
  • Our long-term Plan is to establish continuity across Rush Street’s PA properties, sportsbooks, iGaming and guest rewards programs
  • This rebranding represents a $15 million reinvestment in the property, and all changes to the facility will be completed by local companies and contractors

SugarHouse/Rivers Sportsbook is still not available on iOS, an issue that we explained in detail here.

UPDATE: SugarHouse Sportsbook in PA IS Live on iOS

Kyle Scott - June 6, 2019

It’s been a little over a week now since SugarHouse Sportsbook has officially launched for PA online sports betting.

But there is still no sign of an iOS app.

UPDATE: SugarHouse Sportsbook is now available on iOS. Users are required to download a geolocation app when they sign up here . The app will confirm their location and they can then bet through the mobile web.

As we detailed yesterday, an Apple App Store policy is impacting a number of online casinos and sportsbooks, SugarHouse included, from launching on the platform.

Gambling Problem? Call 1-800-Gambler. Only 1x Wager Applies, Playable in PA Only

For details on what sportsbooks will soon be live in PA and how to play with SugarHouse Sportsbook if you’re not on an iPhone or iPad, check out our PA sports betting page.

SugarHouse not on iOS in PA

The reason is due to a new App Store policy that requires online casino games and sportsbooks to be coded natively for iOS.

PlaySugarHouse , the online gaming brand of SugarHouse available in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, uses a wrap of its online website, and this is now in violation of App Store polices.

The difference is that hard-coded apps can be reviewed by Apple for bugs and security, whereas as HTML code can not be adequately vetted. Make no mistake, SugarHouse Sportsbook is safe and a quality site, but Apple wants to be able to verify those traits itself for online gaming apps.

You can still sign up with SugarHouse on iOS and claim a $250 deposit match here , but users will have to use their desktop or laptop to bet.

Can I bet with SugarHouse?

Users can still bet with SugarHouse Sportsbook but only on Android and desktop.

In New Jersey, you can download the PlaySugarHouse app on your iPhone, because the app was submitted to the App Store prior to Apple’s new developer rules.

If SugarHouse doesn’t comply with the policy by September 3, however, PlaySugarHouse runs the risk of being removed from the App Store or at least won’t be able to be updated until they’re in compliance.

For a list of the best New Jersey sportsbooks, SugarHouse included, visited our NJ sports betting page.

What else is coming to PA?

It’s unclear which of SugarHouse’s competitors will also be impacted by the new policy, but apps expected to come to the state include:

and more.

This will likely eventually prove to be a small bump in the road when it comes to online sports betting, but SugarHouse not being live on iPhone or iPad during its launch period is a serious problem for the operator and player alike as it rules out effectively half of all mobile bettors.

SugarHouse Sportsbook is Offering No Vig Bets Throughout the NBA Finals

Bob Wankel - June 2, 2019

Let’s be real here. No bettor ever wants to lose, but sometimes taking an L just can’t be avoided. No bettor wants to pay the vig on those losses either. The good news? That part can be avoided at SugarHouse Sportsbook throughout the duration of the NBA Finals thanks to its no-vig bets promo. So while SugarHouse can’t guarantee that you will win your bet, it can guarantee that you won’t needlessly pay the vig thanks to +100 main line spreads.

Gambling Problem? Call 1-800-Gambler. Only 1x Wager Applies, Playable in PA Only

SugarHouse Sportsbook no juice

So, what exactly does this mean for the average bettor? Players looking to win $100 on a point spread bet typically risk anywhere between $108 to $115 to do so. For instance, over at DraftKings Sportsbook , bettors must wager $112 for a $100 return on the Warriors at +2.5 and $109 to win $100 on the Raptors at -2.5. Those prices are within the typical market range and more than fair, but SugarHouse is waving the upcharge, so bettors will only have to risk exactly what they want to win. More experienced sports bettors know that over time that “vig,” which is also commonly referred to as “juice,” adds up, so be sure to take advantage of this uncommon offer.

Previously, PointsBet ran a no juice promo on college basketball’s title game back in April, but this is something that we don’t typically see, so if you’re looking to jump into some NBA Finals betting action, you can do so right here .

FAQ: Answering Questions About SugarHouse Sportsbook’s Test in PA

Kyle Scott - May 29, 2019

SugarHouse Sportsbook began its three-day testing period in PA yesterday, signaling the unofficial launch of online sports betting in PA.

That’s the good news.

The… other… news is that there are still many questions and quite a bit of confusion as to what this means and whether or not you can bet, right now, today, on your phone.

Let’s try to answer as many as possible.

Can I participate in SugarHouse Sportsbook’s testing period?

Yes. You can sign up to bet with SugarHouse Sportsbook in PA here . However, betting hours during the test period are extremely limited:

sugarhouse sportsbook test hours

Further, SugarHouse, known for its many deposit options and the ease with which you can get money into your account in New Jersey (a problem for many legal sportsbooks), only has four deposit options currently available:

  • credit or debit card
  • SugarHouse prepaid card
  • wire transfer
  • cash at cage

Personally, I can’t deposit (at any sportsbook) with my bank or credit card, and the next best option is usually bank account login (available at PointsBet in New Jersey) or echeck (direct bank account access). Those options, along with PayPal, are not yet available at SugarHouse in PA.
