Morning Puck: Giroux’s Porn, Simmonds Fight and Bryz Stopped 11 of 16 Shots

Kyle Scott - December 28, 2011

Screen Shot 2011-12-28 at 9.58.01 AM

Good morning from my pseudo vacation, where the Limoncello remains chilled and my NBA 2k12 Clippers franchise is about to get underway!*

*Sorry, Iggy and Co., a virtual team with an explosive big man, the league’s best point guard, and a ‘Nova grad (Foye) is a video game must.

The Flyers shit the bed last night, losing to the Lightning, 5-1. Despite outshooting our Tamponian friends 17-4 in the first period, the Flyers once again had a lackluster second period, in which they mustered only three shots. Of course, if the outcomes of hockey games were based solely on shot counts, the Flyers would have ran away with the victory. Only 16 Lightning shots found the net, which, apparently, is so humongous big, because five of them found the back of the red and white structure. Ilya Bryzgalov may have found his way out of the woods, but he’s now lost in this gigantic galaxy of ours. Some bad bounces aside, Bryz displays a lateral quickness that makes Michael Leighton look like an All-World goaltender. I tweeted last night that Bryz is like a turtle shadowing a worm– and after a good night’s sleep, I still feel that’s an accurate assessment.

Let’s get on to the highlights.

Claude Giroux presents Porn on Ice!

For those of you who can't see that video, or didn’t watch the game last night, Giroux passed the puck to himself off the end boards, spun and fired a shot on net, where the rebound found Scott Hartnell’s still vertical stick.

That was fun, and so was watching Wayne Simmonds beat the Jesus out of Eric Brewer, who incredibly – eye-raisingly – returned later in the game after stumbling around the ice. How he passed a concussion test, we do not know. That video is after the jump.

No Gretzky at the Winter Classic

Kyle Scott - October 28, 2011

Screen Shot 2011-10-28 at 12.15.33 PM

I kind of figured this would happen. There was a short list of players that many of us wanted to see, for varying reasons: Eric Lindros (he's in), Mikael Renberg (TV thing), Ron Hextall (back), Wayne Gretzky (?).

ESPN via NY Rangers Blog via Puck Daddy:

"No, I'll be with my family for the holidays,'' Gretzky said. "Plus, they don't need to see a 50-year-old slow guy out there!''

Boooooo. Once, when he was playing with the Rangers, father CB and I scored third or fifth row tickets (I forget) to a Flyers game. Before a faceoff, with the Great One just feet away, I stood up and yelled: Hey Gretzky… you suck! I was like 14 and had yet to learn proper heckling etiquette (you don't tell the best ever that he sucks). Anyway, I won't have a chance to tell Wayne I'm sorry… from 384 feet away on a freezing cold New Year's Eve at age 28. A sad.

Canadian Banana Tosser Looks Exactly Like What You Would Expect a Canadian Banana Tosser to Look Like

Kyle Scott - September 28, 2011

Oh boy. Wayne Simmonds just can’t stay out of the news. The guy who threw a banana at him in London, Ontario last week was arrested today.

Christopher Moorhouse, a 26-year-old from London, has been charged with “engaged in a prohibited activity on a premises under the trespass to property act.”

Oh Cananda, you and your silly sounding crimes.

From 980 AM radio in Canada, here is police chief Brad Duncan:

"Mr.Moorhouse has been served with a part three summons, and if convicted of this offence – could be liable to a fine of not more than $2,000. This is a provincial offence and not a criminal charge, and will be dealt with in the provincial offenses court."

"This incident affected, not only our local community, it was across the national and international plain – and obviously individuals have very strong feelings about what occurred and I just wanted to indicate this individual has expressed remorse, notwithstanding the actions that he undertook, but we don't want individuals to go beyond what the court will do in terms of the penalty. I've heard the term vigilantism," he said.

Crappy tan, askew wedding party tie, sunglasses-at-night, fratty let’s get rip-roarin’ drunk and rock this dance floor pose– check, check, and triple fucking check. This is exactly what one might have expected a Canadian banana tosser to look like. Or this.

Moorhouse will not be charged with a hate crime, according to Duncan. AM 980 has audio of the police chief.

GLAAD is on the Case of Wayne Simmonds

Kyle Scott - September 27, 2011

GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, issued a press release today directed at the Flyers:

New York, NY, September 27, 2011 – The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, today issued the following statement after Philadelphia Flyers' player Wayne Simmonds appeared on camera shouting “fa**ot” during a preseason game last night, directed at marriage equality advocate Sean Avery of the New York Rangers:

"Hate speech and anti-gay slurs have no place on the ice rink," said GLAAD Acting President Mike Thompson. "The word that Simmonds used is the same word that is hurled at LGBT youth on the playground and in our schools, creating a climate of intolerance and hostility. He should not only apologize for this anti-gay outburst, but the Philadelphia Flyers and the NHL have a responsibility to take action and educate their fans about why this word is unacceptable."

GLAAD is in dialogue the Philadelphia Flyers as well as the National Hockey League (NHL) about specific next steps. Updates will be posted on www.glaad.org/blog as they become available.

Recently, GLAAD has worked with sports leagues including the National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB) and the World Wrestling Federation (WWE) to address issues of homophobia in sports.

Oh lord. I'd like to refer you to Anthony Sanfilippo's blog for the Delco Times, because, really, I couldn't have said it much better.

There's no doubt that pro athletes (and everyone, really) should choose their words more carefully. But singling out one guy for something that is said across every level of every sport – as wrong as it may be – is not the appropriate course of action.

Videos: The Flyers and Rangers Hate Each Other, Simmonds Calls Avery a “F#$$ot”

Kyle Scott - September 26, 2011

Oh HBO is going to have fun with this.

Here's Tom Sestito hitting Andre Deveaux from behind. Also, keep a close eye on the sucker punch Sean Avery delivers to Wayne Simmonds at the :25 second mark. That punch prompted pussy and faggot comments from Simmonds, both of which can be seen after the jump.

This summer, Avery endorsed gay marriage. So, whether Simmonds meant anything by his comment or not, this is going to turn into a big deal.

Here's more YouTube video of Simmonds in the shootout. If you play the video in full screen and 720p, you can see the banana coming out of the left side of your screen around the :03 mark. You can also hear two girls saying "he scored, it didn't affect."

Wayne Simmonds Issues Statement on Banana Throwing

Kyle Scott - September 23, 2011

Simmonds_color

The Flyers just released a brief statement from Wayne Simmonds on last night's banana throwing incident:

“It was unfortunate that this incident happened but I am above this sort of stuff. This is something that is out of my control. Moving forward, this incident is something I will no longer comment on so I can just focus on playing hockey for the Philadelphia Flyers.”

Honestly, it's probably best if we all drop it now. Talking about it just brings more attention to the one loud, lone asshole who threw the banana.

H/T to Joe for passing along the above image

Fan Throws Banana at Wayne Simmonds

Kyle Scott - September 22, 2011

A fan in attendance at Thursday night's Flyers-Red Wings game in London, Ontario hurled a banana at newcomer Wayne Simmonds during the shootout, according to Frank Seravalli.

After the game, Simmonds took the high road. The quotes via Sam Carchidi:

"I guess it's something I have to deal with — being a black player playing a predominantly white sport."

Awful.

Oh yeah, he scored on the play.

Gary Bettman released a statement this morning:

"We have millions of great fans who show tremendous respect for our players and for the game. The obviously stupid and ignorant action by one individual is in no way representative of our fans or the people of London, Ontario."

Seravalli has more. There's a grainy vidoe of the shootout after the jump.
