This is So Dumb

Screen Shot 2013-07-09 at 12.13.57 PMRuben Amaro may be employing his Hey, I Know That Guy strategy again. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the (once-)Big Poker has talked with the Yankees about trading Michael Young for Joba Chamberlain. Why, in the world, the Phillies would dump an expiring contract for a reliever with an expiring contract and 5.75 ERA – and not, you know, prospects - is unknown to me.

Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News tries to explain:

National League sources say the Phillies are amenable to dealing Michael Young and have expressed interest in Joba Chamberlain, a salary-dump swap that would save Philadelphia roughly $7 million. The sources also say Carlos Ruiz can be had before the deadline, too.

That’s inaccurate. $10 million of Young’s $16 million salary this year is being paid by the Rangers [see update]. The Phillies are only on the hook for $6 million, and now that the season is half over, that number is down to around $3 million (and I’m not even good at math!). Chamberlain, who is fat, and who makes $1.88 million, is in the last year of his contract and would be owed just under $1 million. So, swapping Young for Chamberlain is hardly a salary-dump– it would save the Phillies about $2 million, not $7 million.

The report is as dumb as the trade would be. And that brings us to: WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU WANT JOBA CHAMBERLAIN? Corey Seidman of Beerleaguer:

The Phils should instead be looking for prospects in return for Young or Ruiz. Not that they’d get a ton — Yankees GM Brian Cashman’s interest in Young and Ruiz is “lukewarm at best,” according to Feinsand — but a rental reliever serves no purpose. Not unless Ruben Amaro Jr. A) Works out some kind of cheap extension with Chamberlain as a deal is being reached, or B) Thinks subtracting Young and/or Ruiz but adding Chamberlain is a net positive that would help the Phillies make a second-half push.

Exactly. Dumb, all-around.

UPDATE: It’s actually unclear if the Rangers are paying $10 million of Young’s contract, or if they simply sent the Phillies $10 million to do with what they will. Young is still listed on the Rangers’ payroll. If the Rangers simply gave the Phillies money, though, then Feinsand’s salary dump aspect would, in fact, be accurate. But trading Young for a fat reliever would still make little baseball sense.

Carlos Ruiz hasnt done shit. Ever. Terrible catcher for us and his one all star year was because he took steroids. Get him the fuck out of this city asap.

    • He didn’t take steroids.

You fags need to get with reality. Ruiz was the worst catcher in the league for this team. He took a PERFORMANCE ENHANCING substance. Hes a a fucking cheater and he cant gun down someone stealing second for his life. Id rather have a broken down sack of meat like Howard than some cheater. Half the reason you shits even like him is because hes mexicant.

          Owen Hart,

          1) Here is the link to Google Maps (https://maps.google.com/). Search “Benjamin Franklin Bridge”.

          2) Ride your bike (I’m assuming a state doesn’t allow you to operate a motor vehicle) to that destination.

          3) Once at the bridge, punch yourself in the testicles as hard as you can.

          4) Jump off the bridge.

What happened, son? Did Chooch stiff you for an autograph at some card show, and now you’ve boarded the hate train? Say Ruben loses whatever’s left of his mind and trades Ruiz, who replaces him for the rest of the season and beyond? Never mind whatever he does at the plate, who can handle this pitching staff better than Ruiz? Think before you drink then post.

          • You idiots are just feeding a troll. Why even respond to nonsense like that? Hes obviously just trolling, why even give him the reaction he wants?

He threw out Brycecakes last night you Fucktard

      • He def took them. Still doesn’t have a hr this year

Holy crap, you’re a moron. He’s a tremendous defensive catcher who handles a pitching staff better than most. Also, he took Adderall not steroids. Do I want to see him get a long-term deal? Not unless he gets a prescription that allows him to take the Adderall legally. But dumping him for nothing? That’s idiotic. Also, who in the system replaces him? Steven Lerud and Humberto Quintero? Please.

    • Don’t worry July 9, 2013 at 12:30 pm

Owen…what the hell have you been watching? He’s probably the second best fielding catcher in baseball besides Molina. And oh, he never took steroids…

    • Owen first off your mother gives handjobs behind a Delco dumpster, secondly Ruiz hit .353 with a 1.194 OPS for us over two World Series. So just to be clear your mother’s a whore and you’re an idiot.

This would only make sense if they traded Young for a GOOD reliever, not Joba-the-Suck. I’d be down with that and seeing either Frandsen or Galvis man 3rd for the remainder of the year. This smells like NY journo-conjuring to me.

  3. I don’t think the 68 year old 3rd baseman will bring much in prospects, but why the fuck would the Phillies (statistically worst bullpen in NL) add another bad reliever?

The story is most likely poop.

    IT’S GOLD JERRY

  5. Yankees? Prospects? haha good one July 9, 2013 at 12:32 pm

I don’t think we’d get any prospect from the Yankees that would be up to Ruiz’s value in return. I can’t really name too many prospects since the 1990′s that the Yankees have developed from the time they drafted and got them to the big leagues. Joba Chamberlain is a prime example of a blue chip prospect (Remember he was a phenom at Nebraska back in 2005) going into the Yankees system, and being developed (ruined) by their system. Shelley Duncan is another example. I don’t want a guy from the Yankees system tbh the way they’ve developed over the past 5-10 years.

  6. so wait..last night we beat the Nats with the third lowest home attendance of the year, ben revere does a flip and charlie manual rips the loudest fart during the post game presser I’ve ever heard it it gets no coverage?

  7. ThePhillyFlash July 9, 2013 at 12:43 pm

Michael Young isn’t going to make Phillies fans forget Mike Schmidt or even Charlie Hayes with his crappy glove work, but he’s damn sure worth more in trade than that miserable tub of shit known as Joba Chamberlain. As for the asinine comments of Owen Douglass about Carlos Ruiz, considering his post was at 12:24, it’s all too obvious that this fool drank his lunch and isn’t worth taking seriously.

  8. Typical Ruben move. Hate him with a passion

  9. If Rube trades for Joba we riot.

    FACE

  10. We should just package anyone they want to Detroit and get 21 year old outfielder Nick Castellanos, so we can season him in the minors for 6 years like Darin Ruf.

  11. People need to realize we are not going to get much haul of prospects for either Young or Ruiz. Young is likely to retire soon and has an expiring contract. No team will give up a top 100 prospect for him. Ruiz on the otherhand might be able to land Amaro a good prospect but thinking we will get a future superstar is ridicilous.

I would trade Young for Joba as along as we can sign him to an extension. We will save $2million and then can let Asche, Galvis, Frandsen or even Franco finish the year at 3B. I dont think trading Young is consider giving up, however getting a bullpen arm with experience could help.

Ruiz I do not believe in trading for nothing, we are thin on MLB ready catchers. Unless we blow this team up, I do not believe in trading him.

    • That would be a responsible move. We’d please the sell crowd by letting young guys start, and please every one by at least trying to fix the bullpen. Blowing the team up would be a mistake. We don’t have any players worth building around, except maybe Brown, and we would basically suffer mediocre baseball for years to follow. Not every trade for prospects gets a Zach Wheeler, and look where selling got the marlins and Astros
