Meanwhile, Jimmy Rollins and Ryne Sandberg Hate Each Other

You’re not going to believe this, but someone thinks Jimmy Rollins is lazy. This time, it’s Hall of Fame second baseman and Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg, who has benched hitless Rollins all week. Oh, and they’re not speaking. Matt Gelb of Philly.com:

The manager and shortstop have not spoken since Monday. Rollins said he will not seek a conversation with Sandberg; he will wait for Sandberg to come to him.

“Obviously he is upset about something,” Rollins said.

The first hint of any issue came after Wednesday’s game in Sarasota, Fla., when Sandberg offered no explanation for Rollins’ three-day benching. Unprompted, Sandberg praised Freddy Galvis’ “energy and his positive influence.” When asked about Rollins in that regard, Sandberg said, “No comment.”

It sounded like a message for Rollins delivered through the media.

“Well, everyone is allowed to have their own opinion,” Rollins said Thursday. “It doesn’t make it right, but he’s the manager so he gets to have the last say.”

Wow. You talk about a couple’s quarrel. Surprised Rollins didn’t mention the dirty dishes in the sink.

Anyway, things are off to a great start in Clearwater. To recap:

Cole Hamels arm problems.

MAG can’t throw.

Hitters can’t hit.

MAG arm problems.

Jimmy Rollins hates his new manager.

Rollins is a real piece of work. There’s always a counter argument – usually from SABR folks – that the hustle thing is overblown. And maybe it is. But this isn’t a one-time thing with Rollins. It’s an every-six-months thing. He and Charlie Manuel reached a point where it just became part of their relationship. He’s not there with Sandberg, though. And instead of just taking the advice of a Hall of Famer, Rollins says really passive aggressive – and frankly, disrespectful – things like “everyone is allowed to have their own opinion.” He’s your fucking manager, you chode. His job is to have an opinion about you.

Rollins’ inflated self-worth rivals Steve Jobs’ reality distortion field. You won an MVP in 2007– great. World Series in 2008– thank you. Big hit in 2009– awesome. Since? Rollins hasn’t hit above .268 since 2008. Only one of those years did he break .252. His best OPS over that span, .743, would’ve been good for about 40th in the National League last year. It doesn’t come much more average (offensively). Yet Rollins believes he’s Derek Jeter, that he’s some once in a generation talent and franchise player who just can’t be messed with. Stop it.

Side note: Good call by Ryan Lawrence yesterday sensing the trouble in not-so paradise.

  1. It sickens me to watch something like this happen to my Phillies. Jimmy deserves to be treated better. One of the all time Phillies greats. . .

  2. time to trade his ass….i dont’ care if it’s a downgrade – his laziness and not giving a shit can be contagious. enough of it…we can put him on the wall of fame in 5 years but for now, move along Yimmy.

    • It’s too bad he has 10 and 5 rights, so he has a full no trade clause. He’s already said he wants to stay so he can hold all franchise records. Unfortunately, Jimmy isn’t going anywhere.

  3. I think Ryno is sending an even deeper message, one to his General Manager, telling him that RAJ basically has filled a clubhouse with a bunch of lazy malcontents who don’t know what it takes to develop a winning attitude.

Oh, and it’s only a matter of time until J-Roll, in that passive aggressive way of his, hints at the race card. Because that’s the real reason, you know.

Are you happy now, Dave Montgomery? Whose side will you take? Will you continue to enable RAJ to fracture the organization by coddling cancers? This isn’t going away.

The True Detective angle. Like it. Goes deeper. But what about Aubrey?

      • You mean Aubrey Huff? The former Giants first-baseman?

He’d be perfect on this team. He’s 37, hit .192 in 2012, and was out of baseball completely last year. The quintessential left-handed-hitting bench player that RAJ likes.

Except he’d have to change his name to Aubrey Paco Diego DeHuffez or something similar for RAJ to have an interest.

    • You’re the one who just pulled the race card, jackass. Rollins has never done that.

  4. I think what Sandberg is doing is great. I don’t care if Jimmy sits all year. He’s lazy and has a bad attitude. I don’t know why the Phillies felt the need to resign him.

  5. Seems to me ryne might be trying to light a fire under jimmy after the Post 2009 complacency.

CORRECTED: “Seems to me Ryne might be trying to light a fire under Jimmy after his post-2009 complacency.”

The Grammar Police: To correct and serve.

  6. If you say he is lazy you are a racist

  7. Well, I’m glad Ryno went and lobbed hand grenades in the country club that’s been the Phillies’ clubhouse and shook things up. After years of the players skating like villains with Uncle Charlie who ran everything on cruise control, now we’ve got someone at the helm who’s going to demand accountability and professionalism from his players—-or else! If J-Stroll wants to whine like a five year old denied cookies before dinner that he can’t get away with murder anymore like he did with Manuel, just because he’s Jimmy Rollins, then he’s in for an unpleasant new reality. I’m loving this!

  8. Ok, since 2008 Jimmy Rollins is the 7th best SS by WAR in baseball. He’s has the 3rd most plate appearances of any SS in baseball. He’s had the 3rd most steals in baseball. 4th most HR’s. 3rd most runs in baseball. I could keep going. He is not anything to write home about with a bat. Most shortstops aren’t.

Please compare apples to apples when judging Jimmy. He’s a shortstop so stop trying to compare him with EVERY position to use as a justification for calling him lazy. He’s good he really is. But if he’s going hustle like he’s still 22 expect him to not play often and then what do we get? Freddy Galvis #’s which won’t be as good.

Serrrriously people. Learn from your mother and stop shitting on a guy we should be happy to have.

    • Dude, your schtick is not funny and none of your stats blabbering negates the fact that Rollins is a selfish clubhouse cancer who has now been benched multiple times for a complete “fuck the world I’m Jimmy Rollins bitch” attitude.

I would love to see J-Stroll be benched instead of hitting the franchise milestones he is content to get at a leisurely pace. Oh, and can’t wait for Marcus Hayes to pick a random white guy to start crying about now.

Let’s not forget he leads the league in INFIELD POPUPS WITH AN ASTONISHING 5,648 since 2002. The second closest player has 1200 in that time frame.

    • Why should we be happy to have him? And he didn’t hustle when he was 22.

  9. You know Bowa is just loving this shit.

Rollins is going to get fucked hard by Ryno & Bowa and he deserves it. Retard Uncle Charlie placated his pussy ass for far too long. Bench Jimmy for a few weeks then hit him 8th until he cracks 25 walks. COUNTDOWN TO JIMMY CALLING JESSE JACKSON IN TO MEDIATE! 10..9..8…

I’ve been saying this for 5 years now. Jrol is an overrated lazy POS. His defensive WAR was in the negatives last year. He’s not even good defensively anymore. He is a selfish player to the core, only concerned about himself. We never accept not batting leadoff, only he’s not a fucking leadoff hitter. He only wants to stay on this team so he can “break more phillies records”.

He’s the real life Willy Mayes Hayes. Ryno needs to tell him to drop and give him 20 push ups for every freaking popup the guy does. His HRs stat are absolutely meaningless to me. Because after every HR he hits, you have about 2 weeks worth of pop ups on the first pitch because he thinks he’s babe fucking ruth.

Jrol COULD have been one of the absolute all time great shortstops. He had all of the tools. Defense, speed, power, average. Everything. But he’s a fucking egomaniac and couldn’t see the big pitcher.

Instead of one of the all time greats, he’s an overrated selfish asshole who should be batting 8th this year.

To the incoming Grammar/Spelling police. I see my mistakes. No need for snarky comments. Thanks.

  13. Ryno’s message wasn’t delivered through the Media – it was delivered through the lineup card, which is his only real leverage. Only a member of the self-important media would think the media was involved in any way. I think that lineup card posted yesterday on Facebook says it all: Rollins’ name was erased out, and Galvis’ name was written over it. If Rollins didn’t get that message, all the “conversation” in Florida wouldn’t be able to get through that haze of egocentricity.

  14. Rollins is delusional about his worth, even though he found out a couple of years ago that teams were not fighting to sign him when he went free agent and as a result we are still stuck with him. He, Howard and Utley should all be out of here. It was hilarious to listen to that dumb bell Al Morganti state today that if Rollins was on the Red Sox, he would go in the Hall of Fame. Huh????? A Hall of Famer plays like one on any team; being on the Red Sox is not some magic open sesame. More realistic to think he would have been part of the purging two years ago of bad attitude, overpaid divas.

This problem was created by enabler Charlie Manuel. It makes it harder for the current manager. It is not like Rollins performs better when left alone either. He is not worth the trouble.

  15. Man I will lol if Jimmy blows his knee out jogging out a pop up and winds up missing the Phillies records he’s so concerned about.

  16. Starting to wonder how this team would do with Brown, Galvis, Asche, Ruf, & Franco in the everyday lineup.

We may find out sooner than we think.

Personally, I think that team would be pretty good.

  17. And don’t just assume that Jimmy can’t be traded. Sure, they might not get much for him, but if they basically bench him & tell him that he can either be traded or rot at the end of the bench, he’ll agree to a trade.

  18. Nova chokes again

    March 13, 2014 at 2:15 pm

Rollins and Howard need to go early. Just like Vilenova

  19. This would be a more uplifting story if Freddy Galvis wasn’t a weaker version of Desi Relaford. Freddy cannot hit, Freddy cannot walk, Freddy strikes out a lot. Freddy sucks.

    • Hey here’s a guy when he posts on the internet he looks like a jackass.

Boom! Put out some of that stupidity with tough actin tinactin.

      • 395 MLB At Bats
        .230 Batting Average
        .269 On Base Percentage

Throw some of that tinactin on your mom’s stank snatch while you do some research.

  20. which one of those has rollins done lately? just replace strikes out a lot with, pops out to 2nd

  21. Didn’t read the other comments, so forgive me if I’m parroting…

Rollins is an incredibly over-rated piece of crap. I’m so sick of his shit. I noticed it back in ’06. I was watching games over a 2 or 3 month period and I don’t think I saw him see more than 3 pitches in any at-bat. Hack, hack, hack away….and pop ups all over the place. The one year he DID work counts, take pitches, and be selective? 2007…and we all know how that went. Every other year we wants to be his idol, Rickey Henderson, and try to hit leadoff HR’s. But all he does is hit infield pop ups and do a lazy Sunday jog to first. I’m so sick of his act it isn’t funny.

Sad part is that Sandberg will lose this battle. No way an 11 mil/yr guy will ride the pine. Nice job rube.

  23. Ryno and Bowa are trying to overcome the laid back attitude established by Uncle Charlie. A professional athlete shouldn’t have to be benched during the season for not hustling. They are trying to avoid this by sending JRoll a message now. Bowa went through the same crap when Scott Rolen was on the team; he had better things to do rather than play vs the Reading Phillies. Bo had to explain tradition to him. Rumor has it that when JRoll steps into the batters box (if he doesn’t feign injury to retaliate) his new intro song this year will be “The Lazy Song” by Bruno Mars. I welcome RYBO’s old school attitude!

  24. I think everyone needs to understand that Jimmy Rollins not hustling, is all George Bush fault. You are all a bunch of racists if you can’t see that.

YOU’RE THE CHODE,YOU BIGOTED WHITE A**HOLE.First,Rollins-a FAR BETTER
PLAYER THAN THAT OVER-RATED PRETTY BOY SANDBERG-who,to be fair,IS a legi-
timate Hall-Of-Famer-has 200 homers at short despite being about five-eight,170 lb.,and though declining, was in his prime,a great fielder who turned in a 2008 N.L. M.V.P.,and
had about eight great seasons around it prior to his decline.Secondly,Rollins is an outspoken black man about race-you know, the kind your stupid,Tea Bagger like hates because he doesn’t grin, shuffle and dance for “Massa” like the House Negroes you Bubbas pat on the head and say,”Good job, boy. Now get your black a** back out there and dance for us.And you wonder why black kids shun baseball for other sports save ‘NECK-CAR?”Hmmmmmm.

Boo Hoo,you’re so FREAKIN’ DUMB,you’d likely vote for Ted Nugent for Texas Governor or the 2016 “Re-Thuglican” Party Presidential nomination. If you’re a Tennessean,I’ll bet you voted against UAW representation in that Smyrna,Tenn.,election.
