Update: Utley had surgery and the Phillies say he will be out 8 weeks.
Update: Todd Zolecki is now reporting that Utley will have surgery later today in New York.
Peter Gammons (@pgammo) has just tweeted that Chase Utley will require surgery on his injured right thumb.
As we alluded to last night, Utley visited the Philadelphia Hand Center in Havertown yesterday, and saw Dr. Randall Culp, the Phillies hand doctor and who has operated on Utley before, though he didn't do the surgery this time.
Chase will likely miss six weeks (although surgery on tendons is more delicate than on bones).

Chase is in good “hands” at the Philadelphia Hand Center. Dr Osterman operated on my wrist in the past and he did a PHANTASTIC job! All of the DRs there are the best of the best!!! Get well soon Chase 🙂
Dr Kulp performed my hand surgery – not only was the procedure incredibly successful, but the consult and follow up care were unmatched!!!
These are caused by bangs to the base of the thumb area when attempting to break a fall with an outstretched hand and result in the thumb ligaments being hyper-extended. Thumb Injuries can also be the result of repetitive pressure being applied to the superficial nerve of the thumb, leading to permanent nerve damage and loss of sensation in the thumb.
