Somebody Really Needs to Buy Juan Samuel a Stop Sign

Ryan Howard was out by 600 feet

In the first inning of last night's game, the Phillies missed a chance to increase their lead when Juan Samuel ran Ryan Howard into the third out at home.

My first thought was that RyHow should have ran over Marlins catcher John Buck. But when you watch the replay, it's clear that The Big Piece stood no chance.

Sammy is like the sports equivalent of Jeremy Renner's character in Hurt Locker– Fuck it, just go. If it blows up, it blows up.

Piece got a good chuckle out of it.

Video after the jump, bonus annoying Marlins announcers – as seen here – with out-of-context shouting… sort of like T-Mac.

  1. What a waste of a Ibanez hit? I’m sure that he was pissed off. What was Samuel thinking? Oh brother!

  2. Actually, it wasn’t a bad play if you really think about it.
    1. There were two outs, with Gload up next. He may have gotten a hit, maybe not. If you have a chance to steal a cheap run, you do it.
    2. Bonafocio in left does not throw well (he did on that one). It was worth a chance.
    3. The ball was not hit all that hard with Bonafocio’s momentum taking him toward centerfield.
In the first inning it is worth the risk to try and steal a cheap run. And let’s be honest, if Samuel holds Howard and Gload pops up, we would be talking about Samuel should have sent Howard. Catch 22.
Plus I think Samuel has done a pretty good job so far. He’s been a third base coach for a while. It might take him some more time to learn all the tendencies of our runners.

  3. I would have to disagree with you M.W., Gload was getting the start because he had good numbers against the pitcher, and the ball was laced to left field. The announcer on one of the recordings above even said that the ball was hit hard…Ryan wasn’t even at 3rd yet by the time Bonafocio had the ball, and Samuel was ‘up’ the line, not down closer to home like you see most coaches when signaling a runner. He doesn’t know all the guys well yet, and Howard can run for his size, but in the 1st inning, having 1st and 3rd and making the pitcher continue to throw pitches isn’t a bad thing.
It’s hindsight, which is always 20-20, but rather him make the mistake now and learn the lesson in May versus cost a win in Sept.

  4. Yeah those Marlins annuncers can be annoying but they’re still better than F*cknBucknMacarver. One of them tries to be like Mr. Baseball Uecker but fails. At least they got this chick as the “sideline”/”dugout” reporter:

Although she was getting annoying last night, interviewing the “#1” guy from Star Trex (the one with the human robot). And he claimed to be a Phillies fan as he’s from Philly, but said he became a Yankees fan, then a Red Sux fan, after he moved around to those areas. But he was wearing a Marlins hat while he was being interviewed, plugging his TV directing gigs for those TNT shows that are in FL. What a doosh.

  5. i have no problem with sending ryan in that situation. risks are risks, and hindsight is 20/20, and the marlins are the marlins, so who knows.

  6. PS, in all fairness you don’t see Samwell until right as Howard is rounding third. It’s a brief look, but he’s just standing there. But Juano may have given up before Howard got to third because Howard had his head down and looked like he wasn’t trying to pay attention to him. That might explain Ryan’s guilty smile and covering the face with the helmat.

  7. Well, after suffering through the escapades of Steve Smith at third base, I’m will to give Sammy a mulligan on last night.

  8. On thing in your post, Barb: Gload destroys Vazquez in his career. And also, Howard doesn’t run real well (though he’s been better the past two years).

  9. send em’ home sammy!! Sammy does not put a stop sign on for nobody!! Sammy would send Howard if there was a pop up to third and Mike Schmidt was the third baseman. Sammy would send Raul Ibanez if there was a popup to the catcher. Nobody tells Sammy to put up a stop sign nobody!!

  10. when they paned to home plate I actually thought he had already scored. split second later here comes big brown haha.

  11. If the LF gets to the ball before you even make it to 3rd, you should NOT try for home. Stupid play.
What was he out by, 40 feet??? Is anyone actually dumb enough to suggest that it was the correct play?

  12. P.S. The Marlins & Nats have the worst TV crews in baseball.
Oddly enough, the Mets’ TV crew is actually quite good. (They’re better than T-Mac, Wheels & Sarge, frankly.)
Can we please get Franske & LA in the TV booth next year?

  13. Marlins announcer: “Hey Ryan, that guy can throw.”
Get these guys off TV. Anyone with any knowledge of the sport knows that that’s not Howard’s fault.

  15. Right here is the right blog for anybody who really wants to understand this topic. You know a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you (not that I really will need to…HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a topic that’s been discussed for ages. Great stuff, just great!|
