Hunter Pence Brought His Weighted Doughnut to the Plate

Mmm donut.

I probably spent more time than was necessary trying to determine the proper spelling of “doughnut” here. As it turns out, both spellings are correct, but since Wikipedia refers to these as a baseball doughnuts, we’ll go with that version. Of course, as the Rockies’ broadcast crew pointed out, this product is actually called a “hitting jacket.” I still like doughnut better.

Anyway, let’s get to this buried lede…

In the 10th inning of last night’s game, after the Phillies had pulled off their late-innings heist, Hunter Pence strolled to the plate. With him he brought his helmet, his bat, and… his weighted doughnut. Teammates quickly yelled out for him to take it off, which he did.

First coffee, now donuts? Someone is hungry. Good game, Hunter. Let's go eat.

  1. his face as he turns to look at the bat is hilarious.
by the way, what have i been saying about JMjr? beast mode.

  2. He is like a kid on Christmas morning….so excited to get to the plate and play with a winning team!

  3. Dude has to be running on adrenaline, sleep deprived 4 airports and no wumpty and a ride with the Chase… We’re lucky he had pants on.

  4. I don’t know if I’d call that lucky, mm! Far as I’m concerned, he can forget him any time he likes!

  5. Mayberry Jr is the single most underrated player on our team. Love that kid.
Pence is g.d. hilarious. The look on his face as he shook the doughnut off – pure awesomeness. I like him, but I wonder how long we’ll keep him if Mayberry is the cheaper option & can hit. He’s a rightie too.

  6. I have such a man crush on Pence! Thank you Ed Wade u little pecker head

  7. I thought it was a doe-nut because it resembles a female deer’s nuts.
That was a great AB by Mayberry, but what was Street thinking giving him the same pitch he fouled so many times? They were trying to pull him thinking that he wouldn’t get his timing, but of course he did like after what, 10 fouls? Hahahahahahah

  8. @Iron Balls McGinty – first off, fantastic name. Next, the catcher took full responsibility for that call. His thought process was “If this guy’s going to hit, we’ll make him get a hit off Street’s best pitch.” Unfortunately for him, Street hung it ever so slightly & BAM, Junior knocked the leather off it.

  9. I heard on that show Sports Science the using anything extra beside your normal bat makes it harder for you to get a hit then easier. Something to do with if you use extra weight even though it might help you get your bat through the zone slightly faster it throws off your timing and your entire swing. Like you start uppercutting or not bring the bat through the zone straight if you go from a heavier weight to a normal one.
I think it makes sense and ever since Ive seen that episode I always hate when I see Howard with that metal pole or Utley with his weights.

  10. Article in The Wall Street Journal (of all places) today on that very subject! Physiologically, it’s been proven that the donuts are NOT a good idea…
