Soccer in Philadelphia just got a big shot in the arm. According to NBC Philadelphia and FOX Sports, Freddy Adu will sign with the Union.

It looks like someone handed over the Philly GM video game controller, which has made its way around South Broad this summer.

Here's the report from FOX Sports:

The signing re-unites Adu with Union head coach Peter Nowak, who was head coach of D.C. United during Adu’s early years in MLS.

Chivas USA had been lining up a move to acquire the 22-year-old midfielder, but ultimately balked on his asking price, which paved the way for Adu to move to Philadelphia, where he’ll be joining a Union side currently battling the Columbus Crew for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Adu’s arrival comes just as the Union looks to revamp an offense that recently lost striker Carlos Ruiz to a transfer to Mexican side Veracruz. Philadelphia will be hoping Adu can provide the playmaker the squad has sorely needed since joining MLS last year. Combining Adu with the forward tandem of Danny Mwanga and Sebastien LeToux could give the Union the sort of high-powered attack they will need to make a deep playoff run.

Wow.

Adu has bounced around Europe for the last few years, but is a member of the US National Team. At this rate, with the way things are going in Philly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Union brought over Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. Ya know, just for added depth.

Reals: Whether it was the Women's World Cup see-through jerseys success, the strong start by the Union, or the Real Madrid and USA-Mexico matches that recently took place at Lincoln Financial Field, soccer, both locally and nationally- perhaps thanks to ESPN's and now NBC's dedication to the sport, is picking up serious steam. Adu might not be an elite player, but he's certainly a recognizable name and his presence alone will impact Philly soccer in a positive way. Just look: we're talking about it.

I'm hopping aboard the bandwagon.
