A Brief Sixers Draft Recap

Voila_Capture 2014-06-27_09-12-23_AM

There’s a lot of commentary in the, um, Running Commentary from last night, but if you weren’t following along, here’s what the Sixers did:

3

Drafted Joel Embiid, who has a bad foot, back and potentially other issues, but may be the best overall player in the draft. If his career isn’t destroyed by injuries before it even really gets going.

12

Drafted Elfrid Payton and then traded him back two picks to the Magic in exchange for their pick, Dario Saric, a 2015 second-round pick and a 2017 first round pick. This was a clever move by Hinkie– take the guy the Magic want, extort them into a giving up a couple of draft picks. Clever, but Saric most likely won’t leave Europe for two more seasons, meaning the Sixers’ top two picks in this highly-thought-of draft class won’t play at all next year.

32

Drafted K.J. McDaniels out of Clemson.

39

Drafted Jerami Grant out of Syracuse.

52

Drafted Vasilije Micic out of Serbia.

58

Drafted Jordan McRae out of Tennessee after trading 54 for 58 and 60 and then sent 60 to the Spurs. I think. Lots of confusion last night at the end and it was a long night and at this point what does it really matter?

Jim and I will have full commentary on all these coming up shortly.

people are stupid. They would rather win 40 games next year, get swept by Miami/Indiana, and then get some scrub at the 18th overall pick. Want to win a playoff game, so sign Chris Webber or Elton Brand then you still lose in the first round.

Want to be a franchise like OKC, get the 2nd, 4th, and 3rd overall pick 3 straight years and draft Durant, Westbrook, then Harden. It’s not there’s a realistic chance that more than 3 or 4 teams in the NBA can win a title…notice how the Spurs won 5 of the last 15, Lakers won 5 of the last 14, Bulls won 6 of 8 (only lost because Jordan retired)

The problem is there aren’t guys like Durant, Westbrook, and Harden anymore coming out of college. The days of a franchise player are no longer there. No one player dominates anymore. A guy may dominate for a game or two, but not an entire season. These guys might turn out to be good players, but I highly doubt anyone will be that franchise player you build around. Another thing is with the way the NBA is structured guys hit free agency sooner. This supposed core of young players they keep drafting will all not be around when this 6 or 7 year plan comes to fruition. Hinkie seems to think this is like buying corn and wheat in the commodities market. But, the thing is the Sixers do not have a shooter and they don’t have a 20+ point scorer. Until they get that they will never win.

      • steve June 27, 2014 at 11:35 am

regardless…No one is winning the east while LeBron James is around. That’s how the NBA works, every decade there’s a player or two who just go and win every title…or atleast gets there.

The way I see it, there’s a lot of teams paying a lot of money to just get to the playoffs and lose (Brooklyn, Knicks). Does anyone really think either team has a chance against Indy/Miami? And unless you add Lebron, I still don’t think you are winning the East. You can get close, but if you aren’t first you are last.

Iverson had a perfect season and ridiculous playoffs, didn’t matter because he was playing the team that ended up winning 3 straight and only fell apart because Kobe is a douche. When only 6 or 7 players affect the outcome of a game on both offense and defense, you won’t get upsets.

Either you are one of the 4 teams who can actually win (OKC, Spurs, Heat, Pacers), or you are just playing to win 50 games and lose in the playoffs…or you lose and get a chance at drafting the next Lebron.

What you don’t seem to grasp is that there isn’t another guy like Lebron out there to draft. This plan the Sixers have is not going to work. What the Wizards, Magic, and Subs are doing is what the Sixers should be doing.

          • steve June 27, 2014 at 12:23 pm

What if there is next year tho? It sounds awful but you are a lot better off sucking and waiting…It’s not like the Bulls traded for Jordan, or that him + Pippen weren’t top 5 picks. Spurs were anchored by one of the 5 best #1 overall picks of all time for their 5 titles, the Only time the Sixers were relevant was from picking a good #1 pick, and would have won a title if they hit on either of their Bradley/Van Horn picks.

And do what the Wizards do is EXACTLY what I want to have happen. Suck so bad you get the #1 pick in 2010, Keep sucking and get the #6 overall pick in 2011, still suck and get the #3 pick in 2012, and have one last shit year and get the #3 pick in 2013.

        • Zach berman's booster seat June 27, 2014 at 12:39 pm

Its good that you have hope, but there is no franchise player out there. That along with free agency and the salary cap won’t allow this plan that the Sixers have to work. Teams like the Wizards, Suns and magic have 2-3 year plans. Plus, the Sixers do not have a 20+ point scorer, a shooter and experience. all recipes for a team that will be shit for a long time.

          • steve June 27, 2014 at 1:08 pm

I feel you, but that’s the only plan that works in the NBA in my opinion…Draft a franchise player. You only find franchise players in the top 3 of a draft since scouting/testing/tryouts are so precise anymore, there’s no crap shoots or real chances of all stars showing up outside of the top 10. It’s luck at that point. It’s probably why Cleveland wouldn’t take 3/10/32 for Wiggins, he’s the most likely franchise player. Who knows when the next one will be. Maybe it’s Jahlil Okafor or Mudiay. Never really know.

Funny how we hate the Phillies for playing .500 and not rebuilding, but then we won’t let the Sixers rebuild!

      • richie XDU June 29, 2014 at 3:03 am

Shouldn’t take 6+years. This team should start becoming a playoff contender not this season, but the season after, We have a talented core group of young guys, and a lot of cap room (this season, 20156/16, AND 2016/17) before the end of the first crop of rookie contracts end. We get the right free agents (a solid jump shot is not just a priority, it is a necessity), in addition to the young, long, athletic young guys on the current roster, and we could go from basement dwelling losers now, to championship contenders within five years. The 6ers are the next philly team to win a title, trust and believe; IN HINKIE WE TRUST!

  • White Guy June 27, 2014 at 9:20 am

Thank God this is over. Can we stop talking about it now?

In other news: How is it that Bruno; tool that he can be; is out and that useless piece of shit Brace still is on the air?

And for everyone saying they can’t wait for Bruno to sign with 94 and put 97.5 to bed once and for all..what the FUCK are you listening to?? As bad as Mike & Mike, Brace, and even Bruno are, there is not ONE listenable on air personality on 94.

    • Irish Girl From Caddyshack June 27, 2014 at 9:29 am

Agree. WIP sucks ass. Angelo and the morning show is unbearable. Barkann and Ike “Let me axe u sumthin” Reese shouldn’t be on the radio at all. Gargano sucks in the afternoon. I know Brace and Marks are shitty, but compared to the competition they are not far off.

      Tanks fer nuttin!

  • Irish Girl From Caddyshack June 27, 2014 at 9:25 am

2015 NBA draft class here we come! Winless for___________

  • Listen All You Dumbfucks June 27, 2014 at 9:28 am

I hate EVERYONE who thinks we had a shitty draft. Sam Hinkie just turned Jrue Holiday into Nerlens Noel, Dario Saric, a future 1st, and a future 2nd.

If you still don’t understand what Hinke is trying to do, please turn off your computer.

    • Steve Keeley's Tragic and Embarrassing Attempts to look Youthful June 27, 2014 at 9:53 am

      +1

      Amen, Listen. Amen!

Sixers have sucked for this long. What’s one more season of sucking going to do. By the time we wake up from our Eagles hangover, Sixers will have just 2mos of basketball left for us to deal with.

Move along. Nothing to see here.

      • steve June 27, 2014 at 10:14 am

F off guys I want this team to win 40 games so we draft another Maurice Speights / Thad Young / Lou Williams with the 18th overall pick next year! Then we can go sign an old ass Pau Gasol and win 42 games the following year and get swept by Indy! Maybe even win a game against them!

  • Kym Scadair June 27, 2014 at 9:35 am

Our franchise that has broken .500 twice in a decade has decided to slowly rebuild through the draft and maybe sign some FA’s with their huge cap room? But I wanted that cute Wiggins guy who wears cool suits wahhhhhhhhhhh.

  • sean June 27, 2014 at 9:38 am

Trading back from 10 to 12 was great… Hinkie got back the exact pick the Sixers lost in the Bynum / Dwight Howard deal.

  • Deaf Pitcher June 27, 2014 at 10:29 am

Even with this long-term draft plan, the 76ers will probably be in the playoffs again before the Phillies. How sad is that?

  • Realist June 27, 2014 at 10:48 am

“Drafted Joel Embiid, who has a bad foot, back and potentially other issues,”

Please, Dr. Laskowski, MD, enlighten us on what other potential issues Embiid has.

  • Irish Girl From Caddyshack June 27, 2014 at 10:49 am

So, how many picks do we have in next years draft now? I’m surprised Hinkie didn’t flip all of those for 1 or 2 first rounders next year.

  • Mad Men June 27, 2014 at 11:04 am

Seems like everyone who is questioning the draft is being bashed and called an idiot.
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to question the pick of 7-footer with a whole slew of injury issues, and a foreign player with no guarantee that he will ever even come to the U.S. to play.

  • Steve Jeltz June 27, 2014 at 11:16 am

Heard embiid loves the white women

  • Mr. Miyagi June 27, 2014 at 11:19 am

Why does everyone think Saric is not coming here? Because he’s not here now?
Everything I’ve read about him says he is ultra-competitive (so you’d think he wants to play in the best league in the world) and that he’s a huge Magic Johnson fan (again, he would want to play in the best league in the world.). He said he would come over & play this year if the Lakers drafted him, so at the very least you might be able to flip him to LA in a year for their pick and/or Randle if they sout on him (I was really hoping he would fall to #10.)

Also, Bill Simmons is a giant twat.

    • steve June 27, 2014 at 11:37 am

people act like having him play behind Thad Young, getting 15 minutes a game (mostly against backups when the Sixers are down 20) is better. I’d rather him stay in the minors and play daily.

      • Mr. Miyagi June 27, 2014 at 11:45 am

Meanwhile, everyone wanted to take Exum and trade MCW. Yet no one has seen Exum play because he didn’t go up the best competition last year in the NCAA. In MCW’s last two seasons – ran away with rookie of the year, led his team to the Final Four.

I realized last night I would rather watch gawky teenagers walk across a stage wearing funny suits than soccer.

      • Zach Berman's booster seat June 27, 2014 at 11:49 am

Thaddeus won’t be here when and if Saric comes here to play.

  • Dick Shiner June 27, 2014 at 11:29 am

Oh great I can’t wait to hear what Jim the fucking douchebag hipster has to say about the draft. Write another week old shark story you charlie day look a like fuck.

    • Jgivesaf June 27, 2014 at 2:18 pm

The Sixers suck we are the world we are the children just don’t feed the fans…Fuck

  • smite generator July 24, 2014 at 10:35 am

The rest from the patch contains some tweaks in jungle buff camps, changes to abilities plus a retool of focus items.
Hi-Rez studios make improvements to the game every patch,
whether they are balances to heroes, new items
or maybe changes to old ones. Along with Apollo comes
a group of changes including a new skin for The Great Devourer of the Hindu religion, Bakasura.
