“This isn’t a pick, it’s a scratch.”

The Phillies don’t have a lot of things. They don’t have much power, hitting, youth, potential, speed, etc. The natural conclusion you might come to from all of that is that they aren’t going to score very often. Ruben Amaro agrees:

“We’re not going to score a lot of runs. We’ve been saying that. We’ll have to scratch them. We’re not going to scare anybody with our power, but that doesn’t mean we can’t score runs. We’re going to have to manufacture them. We’re going to have to do it with our legs. We’re going to have to do it with our brains and aggressiveness.”

Spring Training is Spring Training, but currently the Phils are “last in baseball with a .581 OPS, which is 73 points lower than the 29th-ranked Rays,” and that doesn’t really have any positives going along with it. It’s going to be a long season, but maybe Ruben can Google “analytics” at some point in that fancy new computer they got.
