The Phillies’ Sad State Got The New York Times Treatment Today

Here’s a lede:

Not long ago, the Philadelphia Phillies were a formidable team. In 2008, they won their first World Series in 28 years and made the playoffs the next three seasons as well. They had power hitters, slick fielders and a strong rotation.

Now that team is virtually gone, and the Phillies have the worst record in baseball.

On Wednesday, one more key piece left town when second baseman Chase Utley was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two prospects.

Phillies fans Wednesday night gave Utley a standing ovation, a salute to his service and a thank you for the team’s glory years.

The past is about all Phillies fans have to cheer these days.

And so on. Nothing you don’t already know in this piece, but yet another reminder how far the mighty have fallen.

Side note: All things considered, things have actually gone well this season. Maikel Franco and Aaron Nola look like the real deal(s). As does Ken Giles. The Hamels trade netted a haul of potential prospects, and they got something for Utley… which is great, especially when you consider that beat writers like Ryan Lawrence were, just a month ago, making fun of people like me for believing that Utley had some trade value remaining:

Here’s what I wrote on July 7 in a post I updated only because Lawrence and others on Twitter were dismissing the notion that Utley had any trade value:

Fine, fine– Utley has no trade value at the moment. But no good comes from dismissing in that manner. Utley comes back, hits .290 with three home runs for three weeks and looks like some semblance of a real player again (totally plausible), I can’t imagine a contending team wouldn’t take a flyer on him after he clears waivers.

Utley didn’t hit .290 with three home runs upon his return. He hit .484 with one home run and five doubles in eight games. And then he was traded.

  1. Eh, I think the Phils look pretty good going forward.

Morgan and Nola look like guys who will hold down rotation spots. Crawford is one of the best prospects in the game, Nick Williams and Alfaro aren’t too far behind. Herrera, Franco and Hernandez look like guys you can plug into the starting lineup for a few years.

You need an ace – Middleton sounds ready to spend – and a couple of back of the rotation guys. Corner OF and 1b might be positions that can be filled internally by the afromentioned Williams or Roman Quinn or Cornelius Randolph (though he is at least 3 years away).

  2. Yeah Kyle, you’re a fuckin’ genius! Why don’t you start pounding your chest like all the N I G S do when they make a good play???

    1. Not the first time someone has done this. In fact in the wigger Sean Brace post, a “Bob” made a hanging reference.

Kyle is racist Delco trash who is fine with this type of garbage on his website.

  3. Any chance of moving Howard or Ruiz? I don’t know if they’ve been waived, and waivers aren’t always reported. But if they need 47 hours on the wire and deadline is the 31st, the Phillies are going to have to put them on waivers very soon.

  4. Just imagine if the Phillies had the courage and/or wisdom to trade Utley two years ago when the really smart people knew he was done and his numbers were a lie.

  5. As much as I hate Philadelphia fans(especially Flyers fans), I kinda feel sorry for you drunken idiots.

Knowing that your Phillies won’t be competitive for the forseeable must really suck for you guys.

Well at least you guys still have bad-knees Bradford and turnover-prone Sanchez leading the way for the Eagles.

On second thought I’m sorry you guys are screwed.

    Go Yankees

  6. Article got a major fact wrong. Said they got Halladay in late 2009. They got Cliff Lee in late 2009, then Halladay prior to the 2010 season, THEN TRADED LEE TO SEATTLE!!, which was the beginning of the end.

  7. Yet a BIG PIECE OF FUCKING MONKEY SHIT KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK MACHINE remains.
    Fuck you Rube

  8. “I WROTE IF UTLEY GETS A FEW HITS HIS TRADE VALUE COULD GO UP!!! DID YOU SEE IT? I WROTE THAT!!!! I’M A FUCKING GENIUS!!! MY GOD HOW DO I DOOO IT!!!”

    You are fucking pathetic.

  9. Remember when Cliff Lee had tons of value and Kyle bitched and moaned about why they should keep him?? Dude is correct on 1 out of 50 ideas/plans or strategy for things and then gloats about an Utley trade that nets 2 avg prospects? Gimme a fuckin break.

The gall of this dude. Even though I like the Utley trade.
