The Judge Who Sent the County Clerk in Kentucky to Jail for Denying Same-Sex Marriage Licenses is Jim Bunning's Son
Jim Bunning, responsible for the most famous Father’s Day in sports history, must be one proud poppa himself (I am so sorry for writing that sentence). Bunning’s son finds himself in the middle of the outrage story du jour.
Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who is now in jail for refusing to issue same-sex couples marriage licenses – as is the law – was held in contempt by U.S. District Court Judge David L. Bunning, son of Jim.
According to Philly.com, Bunning the younger has dealt with same-sex rights in the past, having previously ruled that “a Kentucky school system had to allow a student group – the Gay-Straight Alliance – to meet in school grounds.” Bunning the elder campaigned against same-sex marriage when he was a U.S. Senator in Kentucky from 1999 to 2011. His son David apparently shares his father’s sentiment, but says it doesn’t matter, because “the idea of natural law superseding this court’s authority would be a dangerous precedent indeed.”
