While some were surely hoping it’d be the buyout of Ryan Howard that marked the first move of Matt Klentak’s GM career, it’s actually the buyout of a more useless roster spot. Cliff Lee’s 2016 option was declined by the Phillies, and they bought out his contract for $12.5 million. It’s perhaps one of the easiest moves Klentak will ever have to make, since the buyout was much less than Lee’s $27.5 option.

Lee is now officially a free agent, free to sign with any club he wants, or, more likely, retire.
