On yesterday’s first play from scrimmage for the Eagles, they had a big gain called back because what was originally called a Riley Cooper reception was, upon replay, shown to have hit the ground. In the fourth quarter, what was an insanely acrobatic play break-up (but not an interception) was reviewed and upheld even though the ball obviously hit the ground. No one seems to know what is or isn’t a catch anymore – some ideas here – and that includes Chip Kelly.

Speaking to Angelo Cataldi this morning, Chip admitted his confusion:

“I don’t know what a catch is. I’m just speaking for most coaches. We talk in our meetings, I have no idea what is considered a catch or what — I know what I think is considered a catch, but I’m wrong in what I think is considered a catch.”

And really, this is one of the clearer cases. Usually, the call involves a “football move” or “completing the motion on the ground” or some other nonsense. This is straight-up the ball hitting the ground. And if officials (and the rulebook) can’t get this one right, that catch committee has a lot of work to do.
