Habla Español? You Can Work for the Phillies as a Translator

Last month, Major League Baseball unveiled a directive that requires all teams to hire a Spanish translator for media obligations. Here’s the Phillies’ job posting:

Media Relations Representative – Spanish Language Translator – Philadelphia Phillies (Philadelphia, PA)

Media Relations Representative – Spanish -Language Translator

Reports to: Director of Baseball Communications

Position Overview: Qualified candidate’s primary role will be to serve as liaison between the media and Spanish-speaking uniformed players, pre- and post-game and at club-related events and to assist Spanish-speaking players with questions regarding the logistics of their employment as a Major League Baseball player (transportation, lodging, etc…). Additional duties include assisting the Communications department with various media relations and writing assignments. The candidate also will contribute to the club’s social media projects, particularly those targeted to the Spanish-speaking Phillies fan base. This year-round, full-time position will require the individual work in Philadelphia, attend all home games and travel with the Phillies to all road games during spring training, the regular season and, if applicable, the post-season.

Fluent in English and Spanish, spoken and written

Bachelor’s degree (Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field preferred)

Thorough knowledge of baseball and related statistics

Exceptional writing skills

Ability to assist in proofreading and editing

Ability to create social media content

Ability to handle confidential matters with sensitivity and discretion

Ability to multi-task

Willingness to assume other duties as assigned

Willingness to work long hours, weekends and some holidays

Willingness to travel extensively

Experience in dealing with the media a plus
