Breaking Down Shayne Gostisbehere’s Incredible Game-Winning Play

Kyle Scott | March 28, 2016

Just an absurd play by Ghost with seconds remaining in overtime to keep the play alive and get the puck back to G to put the game away for the two points. Ghost continues to show just next-level hockey instincts, the sort of Chase Utley-like thing you can’t teach in sports.

HUGE extra point, too, as the Red Wings beat the Sabres to keep pace with the Flyers, who have a game in-hand. Let’s break it down:

The dive

Hockey instinct play here, probably more hustle than skill, but still no accident. As much as I love G, had he been in this position, he would’ve swung wildly at the puck like a madman, sending it squirting into the corner. Most guys would’ve. Not Ghost. Nope. He hooks it ever so gently to…

His hand

What sort of wizard has the presense of mind to stop the puck with his hand, and then, in one fluid motion, play it to the man in scoring position with his stick? TRICK QUESTION. No wizard! Just The Ghost.

The pass

So gentle. So soft. Like petting a beaver’s tail– just a nice like stroke and flick to G’s awaiting stick. Game. Buy a shirt:
