The Embiid-Less Sixers Take the Pacers into OT but Fall Short in Another Winnable Game
The Sixers played game one of a home and home against the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis tonight. They played them tough and took them into OT. It was yet another incredibly winnable game. But then, Paul George was Paul George. The Sixers are 0-7. Highlights (there are some I swear):
I’ll start with one of the most egregious travels I’ve ever seen, because I had fun with it:
They had problems with bad turnovers early:
Richaun Holmes blocked a shot that was barely in frame:
TJ McConnell probably said “fuck”:
Jahlil Okafor blocked a dunk. JAHLIL OKAFOR!:

And on the other end, much later, Myles Turner had one of the more athletic defensive plays you’ll ever see:
For the most part, the Sixers’ game revolved around the three pointer. While the Sixers bricked it from the line (9/19), they drained long-range bombs all night (40%, 14/35). Here are the first 13 of those threes, in regulation:
There has been a lot of talk about Brett Brown in late, close-game situations and whether the negative outcome is on him or the team. Let’s look at the play run out of the timeout with 30.8 seconds left, Sixers down 1:
It was an absolute mess. A total disaster. And Sergio Rodriguez, who had a bad game overall, kept it alive and got it to the open man. After that, because Paul George is a superstar, he drained a shot to tie the game. The Sixers were left with 3.9 seconds. The Pacers stuck Paul George on hot hand Gerald Henderson, and Brett Brown’s playcall was ACTUALLY GOOD even though it didn’t work:
The game went to OT. Sixers came out shooting. Paul George took over. There were late game tie-ups. They lost. The Sixers’ next game is Friday night, at home, against the Pacers.
Robert Covington had 23 points (5/9 from 3), Hollis Thompson had 19. Dario Saric had 14 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. Sergio Rodriguez was 0/7 from long-range.
