Villanova Lost
I forgot what this feels like. I mean, sure, the Eagles lost nine games this year, the Flyers have lost 19 times, the Sixers have lost 39 times, and the Phillies have lost 91 times since Villanova last lost. But still, I forgot what it feels like to lose. Me and said Sales Guy Ed fell into a National Championship winning shot wormhole on YouTube. After all, it had been so long. 20 straight wins. Over historic programs. Another annihilation of the Big 5. Three-straight wins against top 25 teams away from home. Everyone playing their Super Bowl against you– like St. Joe’s does every year. It felt good. But you know what? It’s good to lose. My dad reminded me of that fact last night:
You can’t go into the tournament undefeated. No one has won two National Championships in one winning streak. Sometimes you need not even a wake up call – this Nova squad doesn’t need one – but simply a reminder that anything can happen on any given night. It’s best to lose to a ranked team on the road. Still, I’d argue Villanova should remain number one next week. They still have the best RPI. And show me another team that has played four games against the top 25 all away from home. You can’t. I’m fairly certain Nova is the only one. They had to lose one of them. Baylor will probably slide into the top spot, but do they really deserve it after needing a last-second shot to beat Iowa Fucking State? Next you got Kansas. Jay Wright is a better coach than Bill Self and beat him in the tournament and they have only the eighth best RPI. UCLA and Gonzaga– check their schedules. And Kentucky has two losses. Villanova should remain number one. They won’t. They’ll drop down to three or four and be back on top in three weeks. That’s OK. No problem. They’re still the best team in the country. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to vomit into my pants.
