A.J. Bouye Could Be Howie Roseman’s Next Failed Corner
By Kyle Scott
Published:

Stop me if you’ve seen this play before.
Bouye, Pro Football Focuses’ second ranked free agent cornerback, will come at a premium and has only one full season (on a one-year deal…) as a body of work, as noted by PFF:
Coming into the 2016 season, Bouye had logged less than 900 snaps of NFL experience on defense, and was fourth on the Texans’ depth chart. Thanks to injuries, he got his shot, and played like one of the top cornerbacks in league. Bouye was the only cornerback with 10 or more pass breakups and less than 10 yards per catch allowed in 2016. With just two missed tackles, he was one of the surest tacklers at the position. The biggest concern is that Bouye has only shown this ability over one season. He’s going to earn a pay day, but it’s very possible that he will never reach this level of play again. If he is able to reach it, though, some team might get a steal.
Bouye’s ability has nothing to do with any player Howie Roseman has previously signed, obviously… but, these are the cornerbacks Roseman has OBTAINED in free agency:
Nnamdi Asomugha, 5 years, $60 million
Bradley Fletcher, 2 years, $5.25 million
Cary Williams, 3 years, $17 million
Nolan Carroll, 2 years, $5 million
Leodis McKelvin, 2 years, $6.20 million
Cheap toasters have produced fewer burnt pieces of bread. Never mind the six-year, $63 million deal Chip Kelly doled out to Byron Maxwell. The Eagles’ recent history with signing cornerbacks – in some cases big-money, highly sought-after guys – is, well, shit. The McKelvin signing is made even worse by the fact that Roseman traded Eric Rowe to the Patriots before the season (third time I’ve been able to work him into a post today) to make room for McKelvin, who was later cut by the Eagles just as Rowe was getting sized for his Super Bowl ring. So excuse me if I’m not exactly high on overpaying a pseudo breakout star when CB is a position you can easily build through the draft… with guys like Eric Rowe (!!!).
Side note: Ed Werder fucking loves Texas.
