The Flyers have signed unrestricted college free agent Mike Vecchione to an entry-level deal. Vecchione is in the running for the HOBY BAKER AWARD as the top college player. He’s got sweet hair and what I suspect is a strong Tinder game.

The former Union College teammate of Shayne Gostisbehere, Vecchione was Union’s captain and their all-time points and assists leader, and the NCAA Division I active career leader in goals and points.

This season, Vecchione scored 29 goals (second in NCAA), had 33 assists (6th), 21 multi-point games (1st), an average of 1.66 points per game (tied for 1st), and 7 game-winning goals (tied 1st).

Vecchione was down to Philly, Boston, Tampa Bay and New York, but chose the Flyers after getting the hard sell from Ghost. The Flyers will now send Union Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci and two first round picks.

Vecchione wanted to go somewhere where he could play immediately. The Flyers may have guaranteed him a spot on the roster for the remainder of this season, which would use up one year of his three-year deal. If not, he should be on the team next season.

Flyers Twitter is thrilled about this – because Flyers Twitter would be thrilled if the team obtained a new puck bag – but Vecchione was fairly highly sought after, even if he projects to be a mid-line center:

That won’t stop OBs from anointing the 24-year-old rookie as the second coming. But hey, who doesn’t love a guy with “good burst”? Good get for the Flyers.

UPDATE: It looks like Vecchione’s deal is technically one year, which the Flyers will burn for the remainder of this season, but that a two-year extension has already been agreed upon. Odd.
