Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Cowboys quarterback is the color guy on [insert network’s] top broadcast pairing.

From Sports Business Journal:

Tony Romo will be a TV analyst with CBS next season, according to sources. A deal has yet to be signed, but CBS and Romo have reached a verbal agreement. The Cowboys QB is expected to replace Phil Simms as the net’s top game analyst, where he will be paired with Jim Nantz. CBS outbid Fox Sports for Romo’s services, sources said. Fox Sports wanted Romo to replace John Lynch as the game analyst on the net’s No. 2 broadcast team. Just a couple of weeks ago, Fox was considered the front-runner to land Romo, since it carries the NFC package that Romo knows so well. But a concern for Romo was that another former Cowboys QB, Troy Aikman, is the net’s top NFL game analyst, and he is not likely to leave the booth any time soon.

This is some Georgetown hires Patrick Ewing to be its coach-level of name-based hiring. Just like that Romo is going to join Nantz on the top broadcast crew? Imagine being Phil Simms today.* Was the fart the nail in the coffin? Is Nantz behind this? I NEED TO KNOW.

I would assume CBS has tried Romo out (with Nantz?) and knows what he can bring from Day 1. It just seems a little nuts to take a guy straight from the field (OK, the sideline) and put him in the booth for the biggest games. But we all know Romo can wear a headset like a champ.

But wait, there’s more!

Ian Rappppppppppopopopopopoport hints that Romo will also do GOLF with CBS, and Adam Schefter says it will come later:

Imagine being TONY ROMO today. Will he get to do The Masters? Does Nantz have to personally approve such a hire and run him through a ritualistic hazing at Butler Cabin where Romo strips down to nothing but a green jacket and is forced to recite GREAT MOMENTS IN MASTERS HISTORY and Bobby Jones’ favorite sayings whilst giving club president Billy Payne a fierce handjob? I would assume so. Wow.

*Imagine being Jim Nantz any day.
