Zhaire Smith and Justin Patton Assigned to the Blue Coats

The Sixers have two first round picks on their way back from injury, and neither is Markelle Fultz.

Per Shams Charania of The Athletic, Zhaire Smith – the 16th overall pick acquired in a Draft Day trade with the Phoenix Suns – has been cleared for non-contact drills:

It’s certainly an encouraging sign for a player who’s gone through two calamities this year: a Jones fracture in his left foot, which occurred while participating in a developmental camp back in August, and discovering a previously unknown allergy to sesame, which could have put his life in jeopardy.

Also being assigned to the Delaware Blue Coats is none other than Justin Patton, who was acquired as part of the Jimmy Butler blockbuster:

It’s way too early to project what kind of production fans can expect from these guys for this season, but the question on everyone’s mind – and perhaps on sports talk radio – should be: “Who will play a regular season basketball game first: Zhaire Smith/Justin Patton or Markelle Fultz?

  1. Smith probably by game 60 or so. I would be thrilled if he could give us some quality D but I doubt he can just jump into that without any preseason and coming in cold. I still cannot see where he fits on this team. You cannot have him on the court with Ben right now or with MF if he comes back because Smith is also not a shooter. IMO – the entire, stupid, trade was all for Pop. Those assets were going to be sent to Pop for KL. Then Pop waited and received a better offer. SMH.

    1. I think you’re mostly right. Acquiring assets for Kawhi was their top priority imo. That Miami pick was acquired with the idea in mind that it could’ve been the first season without the one-and-done rule. The NBA then pushed back that timeline citing the Sixers/Suns trade.
