Well, the Penn State people have to be happy right now. Get it? Happy…Happy Val…never mind.

With their first of two second round selections, the Eagles took Nittany Lions running back Miles Sanders with the 53rd pick of the NFL Draft.

I had one of my friends who’s a Penn State guy text me to say that he’s “Barkley-lite.” Seems a bit strong, no? Either way, the 21-year-old stands at 5’11” and 211 pounds and has been described as “agile” and “shifty,” so you know he’s good.

Sanders will join a crowded Eagles backfield that includes newly-acquired Jordan Howard, along with Corey Clement and Josh Adams. If you want to go deeper, he also joins Boston Scott and Donnell Pumphrey, too. Given Sanders represents the Eagles’ most significant investment of draft capital at running back since they selected LeSean McCoy back in 2009, it will be very interesting to see what this means for guys like Clement, or even Darren Sproles, who some believe could still return to the team.

Sanders could ultimately prove to be an-every down back, but his versatility as a receiver out of the backfield should initially pair well with Howard who has basically been a non-factor in the passing game since coming into the league.
