Provy – signed.

TK – signed.

The Flyers today reached a six-year deal with Travis Konecny worth $5.5 million annually, a deal that keeps the 22 year old under contract through the 2024-2025 season.

That average annual value makes Konecny the 7th-highest paid player on the team, behind Claude Giroux, Jake Voracek, Kevin Hayes, JVR, Ivan Provorov, and Matt Niskanen. It’s a salary that brings him in line league-wide with players like Nick Foligno ($5.5m,) Bo Horvat ($5.5m), and Gabriel Landeskog ($5.57m).

I asked Russ to chime in since I don’t know anything about ice hockey.

Russ:

“TK is a durable right wing who’s demonstrated an ability to play well off Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux, putting together just shy of 50 points in each of the last two seasons. That said, the question becomes whether or not he’ll remain on that top line. Head coach Alain Vigneault told us on Snow The Goalie that he intends on giving every player a blank slate ahead of this season. To that end, he’s missed the start of camp and Joel Farabee has impressed his teammates thus far through camp. It’s not inconceivable that Vigneault will make Konecny earn his way back up to the top line. Is he worth the $5.5m AAV? Probably, though that puts him firmly at #19 among right wingers league-wide.  Again, it all depends on whether he’s making the most of his opportunities with Giroux and Couturier or floundering alongside current disappointment Nolan Patrick on the third line. I like the fire he brings, and the deal isn’t a bad one. It will only look bad if Tampa Bay manages to re-sign center Brayden Point to anywhere near their rumored recent offer of $5.7m annually. That number will be higher, because centers make the big bucks, but you get it. Here’s to six more years of TK calling Evgeni Malkin a ****ing nerd.”

Russ also points out that Flyers have their top six forwards and top three “youngish” defensemen signed through 2022, while Phil Myers will likely get a deal as a restricted free agent at the end of 2021.

I’d further add that Konecny once called Patric Hornqvist a “useless fuck.”
