Baseball’s hot stove time is upon us.

That means Scott Boras will be a busy guy, and according to Jim Salisbury at NBC Sports Philadelphia, the Phillies are showing interest in one of his many clients:

…Boras represents two top free-agent third basemen, Anthony Rendon and Mike Moustakas.

It is likely that the Phils will look to spend the bulk of their free-agent budget on pitching — and it’s difficult to argue with that approach. That could leave the Phillies as interested bystanders in the Rendon sweepstakes as Rendon is seeking a lengthy, mega-dollar deal. The Phils will certainly monitor the market for Josh Donaldson, another free-agent third baseman, but the best fit in terms of dollars and years might be Moustakas, who has played the last two seasons in Milwaukee on one-year contracts.

According to multiple sources, Phillies officials touched base with Team Boras here at the general managers meetings this week and the two sides discussed a number of subjects — and not just pitching.

In other words, Moustakas is very much on the Phillies’ radar.

Moustakas is 31 years old, a three-time All-Star and World Series winner with the Royals. He suffered a torn ACL in 2016, then came back to put up 151 hits and 38 home runs en route to claiming the AL’s Comeback Player of the Year award. He’s played the past two seasons with Milwaukee, posting a .845 OPS this season while knocking in 87 runs.

Salisbury also notes that Boras has already met with the Angels RE: Gerrit Cole, but didn’t disclose whether he’d met with John Middleton and Matt Klentak specifically about the free agent pitcher. Boras did say that he believes Middleton remains committed to winning a championship, which we should all hope means that more “stupid money” will be spent this winter.
