What a night in Philadelphia!

Over at Del Frisco’s, the Eagles spirit was palpable on the eve of the team’s showdown with the Dallas Cowboys, one that will likely decide the winner of the NFC East. Over at the Wells Fargo Center, fans took in a 125-108 Sixers win over the visiting Washington Wizards. [Editor’s note: Villanova also beat number one Kansas.]

The game would’ve probably otherwise flown under the radar had it not been for an incident between a Sixers fan and Wizards guard Isaiah Thomas. We’ll call this episode When the Wendy’s Frosty Freeze Out Goes Horribly Wrong.

Note: Kevin Kinkead recently wrote about the Freeze Out. Check it out right here.

Late in the fourth quarter, Thomas was fouled by Tobias Harris and went to the line for a pair of free throws. After clanking the first, Sixers fans were another miss away from scoring a free small Wendy’s Frosty. Thomas, a career 87.3% free throw shooter, sank the second. And that’s when things took a turn.

According to Thomas, a fan yelled “f*ck you” multiple times before calling him a “bitch.”

Following a stoppage, Thomas went into the stands to confront the fan:

Here’s another look:

By rule, NBA players aren’t allowed to go into the stands, which Thomas presumably knew, and thus he was ejected:

We’ll let him explain exactly what went down:

Thomas: “I’m a man before anything, and be a fan.”

Grown adult person with ticket to basketball game: “I’m sorry, I just wanted a Frosty.

They say Philly fans are passionate, gotta give ’em that. It was 27 degrees out last night, but that couldn’t stop this guy’s uncontrollable rage over losing out on a $0.99 dessert item. Tough break.

Thomas, of course, is absolutely right in this situation. Fans can and should be able to give players a hard time, but if this is what actually went down–and it seems that it is–then this is a bit too far. Not only do I get why he went into the stands and took the ejection, but I also give him a lot of credit for how he handled the situation, however hilarious it may be.

EDIT:

We’ve been told the fans involved in this situation (two of them) have been banned from the Wells Fargo Center for 12 months. The fan who actually transferred these tickets, but was not in attendance last night, has had their season tickets revoked and has been refunded for the rest of the season. – Kinkead
