Back in April the Cowboys signed linebacker/defensive end hybrid Aldon Smith, who hasn’t played since 2015.

After facing legal and substance abuse issues, he was suspended indefinitely by the NFL but has now reportedly been reinstated, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer and others:

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Aldon Smith has been granted conditional reinstatement by the NFL from an indefinite suspension for violation of the league’s personal conduct and substance abuse policies, sources told ESPN on Wednesday.

The move will allow Smith to take part in meetings with Cowboys coaches and teammates in the virtual offseason program beginning Tuesday. Smith, who has been living and working out in Dallas for the past month, met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell via a virtual call on May 14.

Smith was a beast from 2011 to 2013, racking up 42 sacks during his first three NFL seasons. Jim Tomsula was coaching San Francisco’s defensive line back then, and is now serving the same role in Dallas, so this a reunion between player and position coach. Smith played OLB in a 3-4 scheme in San Fran, while Dallas played a 4-3 last season and is expected stick with a 4-3 base under new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, who replaces Rod Marinelli.

Could be a good comeback story if Smith is able to stay out of trouble off the field. We just need him to play like shit against the Eagles.
