This was inevitable, wasn’t it?

The Eagles parted ways with future Hall of Famer Jason Peters at the end of the season, but with the injury to Brandon Brooks, they will bring him back to play right guard this year:

The news was confirmed by the team, who referred to him as ‘G’ and not ‘T’ in their announcement tweet:

It’s a “kill two birds with one stone” type of signing, isn’t it? He can start the year at guard, next to Lane Johnson and Jason Kelce, which allows sophomore Andre Dillard to assume the starting left tackle roll. If Dillard struggles, you can bump Peters back over to tackle and let Matt Pryor handle right guard duties once again.

Peters, for what it’s worth, noted last year that he’d step in at guard if necessary, saying that he’d like to play as long as possible.

Here’s the quote and blurb courtesy Matt Mullin at Philly Voice:

“Yeah, I’m going to play as long as I can,” Peters said. “As long as I can do it, I’m going to go. Whether that’s tackle or guard, I can play all the way across the board.”

Last season, Peters was coming back from a torn ACL and MCL suffered during the Birds’ 2017 Super Bowl campaign. And if it looked like he lost a step, that’s like because he did. With another full year between himself and knee surgery, however, Peters feels rejuvenated.

“I feel better this year than I did last year,” he said. “Last year I was probably, if I had to give a take, like 60 or 70 percent, but I just tried to grind it out, just tried to help up win. Some games I played OK, some games I played shitty, so I’m looking to bounce back.”

Peters played 75% of the available snaps at left tackle last season and I think we can pretty safely say he’s not going to play 100% at right guard at age 38.

Russ I’m sure absolutely HATES this signing, but whatever. If he wants to write 1,000 words on why Peters stinks, he can knock himself out. I don’t have any issues with it at all. They lost a Pro Bowler and they’re replacing him with a Pro Bowler. If they brought Peters back to play LEFT TACKLE OVER DILLARD, then we would have had a big problem. But these are extenuating circumstances and therefore whatever; it makes sense.

Time’s yours.
