Good news from the ballpark this Saturday afternoon. Phillies second baseman Scott Kingery was on the field and participated in a light morning workout ahead of the team’s scheduled intrasquad scrimmage.

Kingery, 26, missed the first week of Phils’ summer workouts after being diagnosed with COVID-19 last month.

Despite his return, the Phillies are taking it slow with Kingery, at least for today. He did not participate in Saturday’s scrimmage.

After two seasons of bouncing around all over the field, Kingery, who hit .258 with a .788 OPS last season, is expected to be the Phillies’ everyday second baseman this season. There is hope that defensive stability and his own natural progression will put him in line for a big season during this 60-game sprint.

In a story from earlier this week, Kingery told NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury he began feeling symptoms back on June 11. Those symptoms included headaches, fevers, and chills.

After finally shaking the lingering effects of coronavirus, Kingery produced multiple negative tests this week and subsequently arrived in Philadelphia from Arizona on Thursday. He then cleared the final hurdle of MLB’s strict protocols, paving the way for his return today.
