I respect a man who is dedicated to the grind. Phillies rookie reliever Connor Brogdon is most definitely that.

Brogdon, who impressed as he quickly ascended through the Phillies’ minor league system a season ago, positioned himself for a major league call-up following a strong showing at the team’s summer camp last month.

On Tuesday afternoon, the 25-year-old finally received that call. There was just one small problem – Brogdon was locked into an intense game of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

“I got the call from [Phillies director of player development] Josh Bonifay, and I was actually right in the middle of a game of Counter-Strike, so I had to kind of flip one earphone off and pin the phone as best I could and listen,” Brogdon said. “But yeah, it was definitely really exciting. I was just in the hotel in Allentown, kind of just getting ready to go report and then found out that I was just going to collect my things and drive up to Philly, so that was pretty cool.”

Not being an avid gamer, MLB.com Phillies reporter Todd Zolecki asked Brogdon if he could have paused it.

“It was tough because, obviously, I was trying to focus on what Josh was saying, and then at the same time, still compete in the game. And I’m pretty sure my teammate was pretty mad at me.”

Like I said, a man dedicated to the grind.

Not even the most important phone call of Brogdon’s young professional life could disrupt his attention to the task at hand.

Hopefully, he can use such laser-focus to help a Phillies bullpen that entered play Wednesday with a major-league worst 10.19 ERA.

The 2017 tenth round selection of the Phillies features a fastball that sits in the mid-90s to go along with a wipeout changeup.

I asked Joe Girardi prior to Tuesday’s latest bullpen meltdown about Brogdon’s makeup and how he may be utilized early on:

Brogdon also discussed with reporters what he brings to the Phillies.

“As far as my strengths are, I think I’m pretty good at attacking the zone – try to throw a lot of strikes,” he said. I think my fastball and changeup play pretty decent, so I think I’m just going to try to just use the weapons that I have and attack hitters.”

Here’s a quick look at the two-pitch mix:

Perhaps we will see Brogdon as soon as Wednesday night, and if we do, he will be hoping his big league debut goes better than those games of Counter-Strike.

“We got dusted. It was a best-of-16. I think we lost, like, 9-2, or something like that.”
