This may have to be a daily occurrence, somebody from NBC Sports Philadelphia ripping an abysmal Phillies performance. Earlier in the week we had Mike Barkann shredding Nick Pivetta’s bullpen effort, and Pivetta was ultimately sent down to Lehigh Valley. On Tuesday, Ricky Bottalico almost blew a gasket tearing into the Phils after a pitiful loss in which they allowed an inside-the-park home run and failed to catch a ball that landed a few feet from the pitcher’s mound.

Ricky Bo:

Here’s most of what Bottalico had to say:

You want me to sugar coat or go right at this? They didn’t deserve to win this game. They deserved to lose this game. As a matter of fact, you feel sorry for a couple of guys in the middle of the order that actually did some things, but you don’t feel sorry for boneheaded plays in the field. I don’t. This is the second time Roman Quinn did this this week, diving after a ball he didn’t have a shot to catch. He didn’t have a shot to catch it. It landed, what – three, four feet in front of him? You don’t have a shot to catch that ball. You have to make a decision right away. The runner doesn’t score. The ball was hit too hard. Throw it in. Sit. It’s all he had to do, catch it on the hop and throw it in. That’s number one.

Jean Segura, what in the world is he thinking? He is completely on the wrong side of the field to call that ball. Seriously? Rhys Hoskins is standing underneath the baseball. That is awful. And you’re calling it and you’re still on the other side of the mound? Wake up! I don’t know how you felt, but I was embarrassed for a lot of the players out there. I thought this game was an embarrassment to baseball. I felt like it was Bad News Bears type of stuff.

Good stuff. And by the way, Barkann is so much better when he gets a little critical of the teams.

Bob put a lot of time and effort into his postgame recap, which is really very good.
