Back in January, former St. Joe’s basketball star Delonte West was in national headlines when a pair of videos were published online, one of him getting beat up in the middle of the street, followed by a discussion with police in which most of what he said was indiscernible.

The 37-year-old is bipolar and has had immense mental health struggles since his NBA career ended back in 2012. This week, another photo surfaced, showing him in Dallas, Texas, begging on the streets:

It’s really sad. Every new picture makes a bad story worse.

The problem with Delonte’s situation is not that people are unwilling to help. He’s had Phil Martelli, Jameer Nelson, and other former teammates and coaches reach out. The NBA has offered assistance. It seems as though he’s been unwilling to accept that help because of his significant mental health struggles. He has not cooperated with assistance efforts.

What’s the path forward if you’re trying to help someone who is unwilling to accept that help?
